Most gut-wrenching goal we ever conceded?

Raddi Antic all day , Fuckin devastated

This. No doubt about it. Anyone who suggests anything else either wasn't there or is trying to be clever.

This goal denied us what was considered to be a guaranteed place at the top table for the first time in almost 20 years and saw us yo-yoing from top to second - and eventually third - tier for a similar time period.

Argue the toss all you want, but this one goal in 1983 - which saw us in the bottom three for the first time that season as memory serves - more pertinently saw the club unravel and continue to do so for the rest of the 20th century.

It depends on your perspective at the time. I was pretty much level with Antic sat in the Main Stand and whilst I was devastated I could not have imagined (nor could any other City fan) what a profound and far reaching event we had witnessed.

So, upon reflection it was the most gut wrenching after the event, but not the worst I've ever felt at the time. That dubious honour is bestowed upon the Owen goal, partly because it seemed (at the time) that we were always destined to play second fiddle to united no matter how much money we threw at the team and partly because I fucking hate those cunts.

You are correct about us only being in the bottom three for about seven (?) minutes that season btw, BTH.

I don't really think it depends on your perspective, Gordon. Although I write from a position of hindsight, for reasons I have outlined: that goal wiped out almost four decades and therefore approximately 40% of the club's history: the previous nigh on 20 years and almost the same again afterwards.

There have been some goals that have been hard to take, admittedly, but for the magnitude of this one on the levels I have outlined, no other goal even comes close.

The worst for me was the Adebola goal late on for Birmingham. It suddenly struck me that we could actually end up in Division 3.

I did a piece in "Daisy Cutter"; an Interview with Dave Wallace and when I met him we talked about the bad times. GDM; who has just posted told me once how after this one went in he left the Ground and bumped into Dave Wallace and both just looked at each other speechless.

We could suffer heartbreak on a par with this in a weeks time.

Imagine Everton getting something tomorrow and then United getting a late, clearly "should never been given in a Million Years" decison that robs us of the Title.

Antic goal I'd forgotten about... I was only 10 at the time and just have memories crying all the way home...

Although Taylor goal I remember nearly being sick on realisation that it was likely to spell another year in Div 1... I missed horlocks goal because I was curled up in my seat

Well, firstly I would take issue with you saying it wiped out four decades of the club's history. In a sense it shaped a colourful part of the club's history and one which, with the benefit of hindsight, I wouldn't change for the world.

It's been an interesting journey, but one I'm glad we traveled, given where we've ended up. Would you honestly swap all those tales of woe in the lower leagues for thirty years like Everton, Villa or even Spurs have experienced? I wouldn't.

I certainly would (and did) feel very different when we were underachieving, but now that is no longer the case doesn't it make what we're experiencing right now even more enjoyable?

So you may think me a little peculiar when I say this, but thanks Raddy. That goal may have put us through 25 years of relative hell, but we lived to tell the tale and no-one can ever take away from us what we, as supporters, did to keep this great football club going during those dark days. That will make these next few years even more enjoyable, for me at least.

We've got such an interesting history and I wouldn't change it for the world. The narrative of this football club is its one of its greatest endearing qualities and Luton '83 is very much part of that.

Felt bad when Dave Watson headed an own goal past Joe Corrigan in December 1976 to give Liverpool a 1-1 draw,we lost the title to them by 1 point if I remember correctly.
