A lying cheating drug abuser as an icon?

Jeez!

Damn straight.

Players can hardly touch a pint these days...... Maradona partied like a rock star and was still the best.

Limp dick probably wins though.

Partied like a rock star and still the best.....CORRECT....IMO

If I had to choose a player from the last 10 years as an icon......would be iniesta, without a shadow of doubt......greatest player on the planet at this time, for me that is.

Fantastic player. But an icon? As people rightly say its not the most talented but maybe talent, how recognisable they are, how many people imitate them etc.

I doubt Iniesta is well known by non football fans. Where say a Ballotelli is known the world over but isn't a patch on him as a player. Id say Mario is more of an icon under my definition.

Your probably right mate.....was just going off my own opinion...would love to see iniesta in the city shirt, even if for just 1 season.

Cruyff for me.
We were( and still are) in awe of footballers because they came fom South America. No justification except they were good in their own backyard. Bonkers!
Nowadays? Spanish Dave and Ozil.

LOL.
Typical revisionist history. We are in awe of South American players, because they were that good. Without the explosion of money in Europe, the top South American teams regularly beat the best European teams in 'friendlies', which were as friendly as a rugby test match. The fact that Brazil won 3/4 world cups and made 4 world cup finals out of 6 has a lot to do with it too.

Would probably go for George Best. I grew up in the 60s and was dead jealous of United for having him. He was like the 5th Beatle. But when we got Marsh it was brilliant. He was our equivalent.
