Ha ha. I wasyou have to be joking, he was completely overrated for me, never scored the goals, far too small and easily pushed off the ball.

I know that’s why he went to USAUnder rateably crap?
He did have lovely 80s blonde hairHa ha. I was
I'm not sure where this idea of him being a mercenary came from. He signed a five year contract with City, which he saw out being probably our most consistent player over that period. Another club came in for him offering him more money and better prospects of success (this was at the end of Pearce 07!). What's everyone's problem?Great defender but utter mercenary, always had the feeling he did not like football but was just very good at it and loved the money.
He was at Newcastle (loan?) before signing for us, they had a deal agreed but we came in and he left them for our better terms.I'm not sure where this idea of him being a mercenary came from. I bumped into him in town a couple of times too and he was always really polite when I asked him annoying questions!
Quality defender, proved it again at Everton.

He was a top guy but for me he was simply a hired hand, he never got any club, he just wanted the biggest pay packet he could find, not that there is anything wrong with that.
He did have the last laugh winning the FA Cup and I agree he was a very high class CB, he made Dunny look better than he was.Think he just kept himself to himself to an extent. I thought he was fantastic when he joined, but my memories of him in the last couple of seasons he was here was mostly him shaking his head and looking frustrated.
Think he joined thinking we were ambitious and wanting to win things with us, but later on we didnt have the money and quite a few of the players werent really up to it. Didnt really blame him for getting out at that stage.
Eh?Phillips had a wonderful first season but then his career went off the cliff.
No offence and thanks for the enlightenment.Eh?
He left City and won the FA Cup with Coventry the following year! He then went to Norwich and was part of the side that finished 3rd in the PL. Then went to Forest, won promotion (as player of the year) then qualified for, and played in, Europe by finishing top 3 or 4 the year after.
His spell at City, therefore, was one of his least successful spells!
Sorry Keeper! Nothing personal :-D
Amazing that Big Joe came back from the dogs abuse he got from our own fan base, he turned into a wonderful keeper and would have got far more England caps in a different era.Big Joe Corrigan, not by City fans but everybody else, he was in an era with the likes of Clements and Shilton so never really got recognised as much as he should, for me …!!
Apologies for being a know it all on Philips! He scored the only goal in my first City game (v Boro, March 1985) and so was my fave player, and after he left I followed his career avidly. No offence and thanks for the enlightenment.
Just goes to show how the memory fades with age:)
I just had no recollection of Philips after he left, he clearly had a very decent career.
Nothing wrong with that, he scored some stunning long range goals for us, he was a favorite on Match of the day in that era.Apologies for being a know it all on Philips! Just had a quick look to see what he’s doing now. Assistant manager at Benfica. In the 13/14 season Javi Garcia was a dependable defensive midfielder. I think it was against Hull when Kompany got sent off and Garcia had to fill in at centre back and he did his job pretty well.
One big ugly unit, great defender.Vonk - cost very little and thrust straight into the team. Was good as a defender and emergency forward.
Was useful at both ends of the pitch.
