I posted once in a thread with regards to penalties and red cards, I can't believe that any penalty should result in red unless it is for serious foul or dangerous play.
I know pundits and commentators spout the usual spiel about being denied a goal scoring opportunity.......but a foul resulting in a pen isn't actually denying a goal scoring chance. It gives the attacking team a free shot at goal from 12 yards, with the keeper on his line, and no chance of the penalty taker being challenged by a defender.
How much of a goal scoring chance do you want?
Because defenders would play the percentage game as they did before the rule was brought in. There's always a chance a penalty will be missed and no red card isn't a deterrent. Apart from physical fouls, I can remember a time when defenders deliberately handling the ball on the line to stop a certain goal was not uncommon. You rarely see that these days. No red card, no deterrent.
Bollocks. Officialdom gone mad. There are too many games ruined because a player is sent off for this BS. His team have already gone a goal behind and then have to play the rest of the game with 10.
