MP Sir David Amess murdered in Essex

Totally shocked. These people are parents, grandparents, wives and husbands. Regardless of your political stance, they're still human beings. He was democratically elected and to end his life because you disagree with his political views is complete madness.

We do not yet know that this is the reason behind his murder. It is likely to be the case, but keep your fingers off the keyboard for long enough for the information to be reported.

Perhaps worth remembering that Jo Cox was 5 years ago, Stephen Timms was stabbed 10 years ago, Nigel Jones was attacked and his aide murdered at a constituency surgery 21 years ago.

5 MPs were murdered by the IRA between 1979 and 1990.

This is a terrible thing to have happened but if it is indeed politically motivated, violence against politicians is not new in this country or the product of social media or things getting worse because of language spinning out of control.

It would be nice for things to calm down a bit online and I certainly won't object to those calls which will inevitably come in the next few days, but don't let people convince you that this is a phenomenon of the 2020's.

Politics is a pretty toxic environment right now in the UK with several big issues seemingly causing unrest up and down the country. There is likely the odd disturbed individual out there still, capable of doing something as horrific as today's incident. Its not anything new, sadly and it's near impossible to guarantee any MPs safety when meeting constituents.
Just a sad sad story all round.
Condolences to his family and anybody affected by this.
