Should have stuck with the same back 4, defence were all over the place. Thought Kolorov was particularly poor last night & if it weren't for Joe could have been 2 more. I cant understand the mentality behind not starting one of the best strikers in the world and leaving it until 9mins from time to bring him on.

Gutted, but on we go. Forza Mancini.

But last night it was suggested that Sergio was not fully fit !!
Well what the fucks he doing on the bench at all then ??

Re: Summarise

Kolorov really had a shocker last night, like Bale he should be moved out of defence and into a midfield role. Mancini keeps playing Zabaleta/Kolarov in the CL and we keep conceeding first.

Napoli have a side set up for cup football, defend from the front as a unit, break with pace and numbers. But we showed we could and should have at the very elast matched them, they were up for it last night and our tempo suggested we weren't on the same level.

We've tried to attack in every game.

When you watch Utd and Liverpool in Europe away, their priority has been not to lose.

If there is a lesson it is we are not at Barcelona's level yet, and should be more defensive away from home. At 1-1 we should not have lost that game. Still we did, move on to the next Cup Final

Absolutely agree!

I posted this on another thread, but it speaks the issue. So, I apologize ahead of time if anyone read it before.....

The technical expertise of those around NDJ is making his "skills" look ordinary, and his "locked door" DM position is being replaced in a system that allows interchangeability as a norm.

There are very few teams against which we need to try and shut up shop and attack on the break, but he also seems a bit lost in that set-up, as he is the master of the 5-10 yard sideways pass.

Tonight, Napoli attacked down the channels, which bypassed NDJ, and exposed our attacking full backs, especially if the midfield had committed itself to attack. Sadly, we have seen NOTHING on the order of Napoli's lightning counterattacking in the Prem, and we look a tad ordinary when we are defending under pressure, especially when we have not had a little time to get organized.

NDJ is a specific TYPE of player that we needed against the Top 6 last season, as we were building from the back. This year, we are defending by attacking, and (for me) we were more than a little naive in Napoli. We should have been playing for the draw and counterattacking at speed to try to expose Napoli's frailties. However, we often pressed with 7 or 8 players and were almost begging to be hit on the break.

In the Prem, we have set off at a sprint and have not really slowed down yet. In the CL, we have not learned that it is a six game marathon and the way into the next round is win at home and play not to lose away. We appear incapable of NOT trying to win by scoring more than the opposition. Last season, we won by not letting the opposition score, and thus did not need to average 3 goals per game.

Time to shut up shop for a few games, as Baconface has done at ManUre after we spanked them. I would rather we started winning a few games 1-0 and grab a few draws away at some of the tougher teams than go for broke for 90 minutes every game and play with a 3-1-6 formation that leaks goals to teams we should not be leaking goals to.

De Jong certainly has a role to play in such games, where we need to fill the midfield with NDJ, Yaya, Barry and Milner, with Silva/Nasri/Aguero in the hole behind Dzeko/Mario. Milner has the engine to get forward, and Yaya always gets up there when needed and even creates a few runs a game from that position. However, we will have the opportunity to put this to the test in a few games coming up, so it will be interesting to see if we do.

In short, would hate to see us throw away a 5 point lead by attacking with our hair on fire while leaving the back door open for other teams to exploit. Love the attacking flair, and the goals, but would like to see us shut up shop a little and let the flair players show their skills on the break.

We have to beat Bayern at home and they have to lose or draw at Villareal. Going by Villareal's piss-poor performances so far I doubt we are going to get through unless we are extremely lucky. Even beating a Bayern side if they play a few kids is not going to be easy.

Re: Summarise

Mancini got it tactically wrong tonight, worryingly not learning from the first game. Napoli play a very narrow defensive formation and are incredibly strong through the middle with the 3 central defenders are also two of the front three dropping back behind the ball when they lose possession. We all saw the effect Barry had when he came on in the home game, although it appeared to be a defensive switch with Johnson coming off it give us more control in the midfield and we could dominate possession. Conceding the two goals was just schoolboy defending and it was so obviously coming because we were getting outnumbered in that midfield area. We should have reverted back to last season when everyone said we were playing 3 defensive midfielders (even though us City fans know that was bollocks) with De Jong & Barry holding and Yaya doing a bit of everything.

At times with Mancini some of his decisions are baffling. Away from home in the champions league knowing a positive result will give us a great chance of getting to the knockouts. His rotating of the back 4 was just stupid. The 2 fullbacks should of started in Richards and Clichy we are more of a force with these 2 in the team.

Every other area of the pitch I couldnt complain midfield were solid for most of the game and held onto the ball well. Up front Mario and Dzeko just didnt gel. Dzeko was poor tonight didnt get any chances and his overall display was just not there.

Mancini subs. Again a baffling decision to only put Kun on with the final 10 minutes to go. He should of been on earlier in the game. When he came on he was lively and causing problems. Our first champions league appearance and we are it seems heading out tatics tonight wasnt right by Mancini. This is were Mancini has failed in the past his record in the Champions league is shit in recent years. It was the reason Inter got rid of him in the first place it wouldnt be a surpise if the same thing was to happen at City if the team doesnt progress in the Champions league next season.

Agreed 100%, shocking team selection and baffling use of substitutions far far to late to have any impact, WE NEEDED TO WIN FFS!!
The jury is out for me with Mancini and the Champions League, just as it was with him at Inter.
