Is he somebody you build your defence around? No. But we don’t need that, we’ve got Laporte for that, what we need is options, homegrown options. He’s high on the list that fit into that category so I’d be happy enough with Laporte stones otamendi and Ake as our centre backs. Give Pep a chance to see how high he can take Ake then the following season when it comes to replacing Otamendi we can go for the very best.

I don't think ability was Denayers issue.Youre right......it seems even Pep's approach fell flat.

I’ve always liked Ake, mostly based on seeing him play us but also a few other games against our key rivals (those being the games I generally choose to see if they don’t clash with ours).
Unlike the many ‘experts’ with very forceful views on here, I’m just an ordinary supporter with a love of the game, but I’d like us to sign Ake because I think he’s got a bit of something special about him and that would confirm that Pep & Co share my opinion.
I’m looking forward to the outcome beyond the conjecture.

Positives - Fast, good in the air, a threat at set pieces, never injured, good on the ball, better than half the price of slab head.

Negatives - left footed, 5'11

There are some more positives:

versatility (he sees himself more as a DM), great workrate, positive character and HG.

Sadly, we actually have no use for Fabian even IF he was fit.
Aké instead of Delph would be a clear squad improvement for CB.

Maguire's only advantage vs Aké IMO would be height - for some 40m. Hm.
Maybe Rodri is bringing in enough aerial support at least for set pieces.

We then could still replace Ota like for like if need be.

Chelsea is said to have a 'first refusal option' for Aké.
Obviously that option would be useless during their transfer ban?

I might be missing someone but as I see it, the top 3 homegrown centre backs that we don’t currently have in our squad are (in no particular order) Maguire, Ake and Gomez. Gomez is unobtainable, Maguire is a rip-off, so Ake would be a decent shout. Perhaps he’d be more cover for Laporte than a partner for Laporte though. Don’t know if that’s an issue. Depends how much the club still back Stones.
