Nathan Ake

The more I think about it, the more I can see him playing left back for us.

He gave an interview three years ago saying his favourite position is midfield. With the way we often play we expect our fullbacks to drift in and sit at the base of midfield. It's also cost us a few times this season (most recently against Chelsea and Southampton) when our current left backs have been caught out on the ball.

He's also way quicker than Zinchenko and Mendy. Mendy's sprint speed is decent but it takes him about 40 yards to accelerate. Recovery speed on the defensive end has cost us goals the same way it did in Pep's first season and then with Delph.

Although Ake will never been as dominant in the air as bigger defenders, he's an immediate improvement on any fullback we have. Walker's okay on the defensive end but has never been a threat from set pieces whereas Ake attacks the ball well and has a good anticipation of rebounds. Lightyears ahead of Zin and Mendy in that regard.

The only concern I'd really have is in terms of crossing. It's something we've lacked with the likes of Delph and Zinchenko because neither are naturally inclined to overlap down the wing. On the other hand, even when Mendy's crossing is on point we've struggled to get anyone on the end of it and the likes of De Bruyne, Mahrez, Foden and hopefully Ferran Torres all have the ability to whip in a dangerous ball anyway.

I might be talking out of my arse and I'm not sure that it's a good idea to go into yet another season without a reliable, natural left back but I'm sure we'll see him there at some point.

We might see him at left back in games when we are expected to be under intense pressure (Liverpool/that lot) but he’d offer precious little going forward, which would mean changing our entire shape and system of attack. He is an orthodox defender, so we should expect him to do just that and deputise for Laporte.

The way we play requires a left-footed centre back and a left-footed full back who can get forward. The pairing of Stones and Otamendi against Bournemouth merely evidenced the problems we continue to have when pairing two right-footed defenders. Stones’ passing remains circumspect, with him regularly passing the ball to Otamendi’s right-hand side, often behind him, which then means Otamendi has to collect the ball, turn, and play a right-footed pass to the full back. Because that pass is invariably spinning out of play, it means the full back has to wait for the ball to arrive, at best, or, as more often happens, retreat a couple of paces to collect the ball. All of those things take vital seconds and allow the opponents time to shuffle across and regroup. A left-footed centre back plays the ball so that it shapes in front of the full back and accelerates our point of attack.

Ake could well be the answer when Laporte is out/rested, but he’s not the answer to our left back problem. As you say, we can but pray that we’ll go into this season with two fit left backs. Maybe Ait-Nouri will come from Angers.

Doesn't fill me with hope at all, I just dont think he's part of the solution. Possibly a decent squad player but nothing more. Our signings continue to be underwhelming

The problem is his wages. £120k a week apparently.

Always the way with signing players into their 30's. You never know when the the form will drop of and the wages can get massively out of kilter. We are not desperate for squad places so I would imagine he will stick around unless we pay him off. I'd much prefer we keep Stones as he could still come good where as Ota is done in now.

Depends what problem you think he is solving.

If it is that we get a defender who can actually get on the pitch (Stones) and is not a headloss for most games (Otamendi) then I would say he is a solution to a huge problem we have.

Would we have to change anything really? Both out title winning season were played predominantly with central players making a switch to left back and they were successful for a time because they served the system. I didn't see anything from them that Ake couldn't do and he'd be a big improvement on both defensively.

I agree with all of that and it's why Ake will also be Laporte's backup/ rotation option. A similar player who has also played one or two times for us at left back but didn't have the athleticism to pull it off.

I've got a feeling we'll end up with Mendy and Angelino as our left backs if Leipzig can't pay the money.

Starting to really like the idea of this signing. As others have said, Laporte, koulibaly, Ake, garcia and fern is a great set of CBs. I hope Torres isn't our only attacking signing though, I'd like someone who would guarantee us goals like Havertz.

Agree with this 100%. Why on earth do we need a centre back who is weak aerially ? We have enough of those already.
Since we were linked with this guy last season, I have made a point of watching him in detail, underwhelmed.

After all we have done recently - the trophy haul, the points haul etc and you come out with that one liner.

Seems no matter what the club do and achieve, some will still be needy & entitled.

So we haven't made any bad signings at all then? As for needy and entitled you can f**k off! Because I believe one player isn't good enough to play for the club.

As I say, you are entitled as, despite what the club have achieved (even with the signings you list) it isn't up to your lofty needs.

Time to wake up and understand that in the scheme of things, you know the square root of jack shit when it comes to signings and who and who wont be a good fit.

We did have Sane for those particular seasons which meant we had a natural left-footed attacker who could stretch the field and attack both the outside and inside. Similarly, we had Silva playing in the hole in front of Zinchenko/Delph, and his doggedness and passing accuracy helped them enormously. Angelino could be back but he has problems playing in a back four, as Nagelsmann mischievously highlighted, so that might not be the answer.

Well seeing as you seem to know just about everything what are next weeks winning lotto numbers?

I bet you're one of these who goes round claiming to be the biggest blue around as well.

Stones is the more gifted player but his confidence is shot and he has far too many lapses in concentration.

The reported fee does seem a tad inflated but Ake should be a good squad player.
