Maybe it should be 'His battle against a racist regime that beat, killed and raped black people'?
Honestly the way some of you are going on you'd think he should have just invited Apartheid round for a cup of tea and the only arguement should have been rich tea or jammy dodgers.
That's a very good point. I think Mandela had his faults in his earlier years but there was no doubt that he eventually became a remarkable human being. However, I would be interested to know if he was in any way involved in sanctioning the more indiscriminate bombing campaigns of the ANC during the 1970's and 1980's which resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians. I can't see how he could've approved of such behaviour but I'm not sure it's ever been proven either way has it?
Well we definitely know his wife Winnie certainly was as she encouraged the act of tyre burning innocents in a speech.
I respect Nelson Mandela greatly and has lived an extraordinary life! I take my hat off to him for leading a peace campaign during his 27 years in prison. I haven’t even been alive for that period of time and to me what he did was sensational.
However, I am a history fan and what I can’t stand is people who are very selective with their history (a bit like the rags) and dismiss events which they are ashamed of. The BBC is supposed to be unbiased and factual. I was simply stating that it was a bit poor not to really mention his violence, bombings and terror acts before his imprisonment. If you lost a relative to an ANC bombing I don't think you'd want to dismiss that chapter in history would you?
