I don't know much about it personally but for all the hate coming his way I can only say this

Perhaps in the dark days of South Africa where you have no rights, no freedom and you are valued no higher than a dog then perhaps you live by a completely different set of rules. What do you do in a place where you are killed because of the colour of your skin, your women raped, your children beaten ? What do you do when nobody cares ? Who do you tell ? If I had to fight for my family against tyrany then I could honestly say regardless of my morals and values I WOULD kill. I'd say walk a day in that mans shoes and then judge his life. I bet he wishes things could have been different but that would have involved fairness and equality, something many have died for.

RIP Mandela

Great post bob

Unfortunately though some people are very judgemental whilst knowing nowt.

Yup, good post. Some right knuckle draggers on here tonight though I'm afraid

Here we go again, nobody is allowed to voice their opinions unless it suits the mourners.

Indeed. However, having read through, for example, Blue Underpants' contributions to this debate, I am of the opinion that his opinion isn't worth a fig. However, nowhere do I state that he is not entitled to his opinions, so what exactly are you bellyaching about?

Fuck it. I've had enough. I've been here all day. The mans life is defense enough of his integrity.

I pity you who cannot get passed your hatred.

4chan are now mass circulating images of Mandela overlaid with Hitler and Stalin quotes, which are being retweeted and Facebooked as genuine tributes.

You have to concede subversive genius points for that.

There you go. Dragging your knuckles along the ground to express your opinion.

Though working out there in the 1980s I know a few friends and colleagues who's lives were adversely affected by Mandela coming to power, but it was obviously coming the winds of change and all that, mainly it was down to them nasty Americans turning the sanction screw on South Africa.
For anyone who's been they will know how beautiful a country it is and should big enough to give all there a good living. Unfortunately at the moment and its no good shying away from the fact the majority population won't make a good job of running the country and as a nation its probably downhill from here because whatever you say about Mandela he did keep a bit of a lid on things. As for minutes silence why we would have one over here i'm struggling to understand do we have one if a U.S. president passes away or a German one no I think this is driven by the T.V. saint makers if we do have a minutes silence then i'll observe it like I would any minutes silence out of respect for others I struggle with the reasons behind it though.

spot on...beautiful country but only going one way from here on in it seems sadly

on the news they are talking about his legacy but not mentioning the current crime stats which include a very high murder rate by global standards and one of the very highest rape rates in the world

a quarter of south africans are unemployed...I'll give you one guess where the problem lies there.....

south africa is believed to have more people with HIV than anywhere else in the world etc etc

listen I know it was going to be supremely difficult but I'm struggling to see what progress has been made under Mandelas stewardship regardless of what an icon he was and what he represented in terms of the end of apartheid which was all good of course

it is still a divided nation boys and girls

go and check it out while you can

RIP Mandela

But by doing what a "normal" person would do, you cease to be extraordinary. Sanctioning the murder of innocent women and children makes you no better than those you oppose, which is why do many people are annoyed that his "legacy" doesn't represent the man he was.

Martin Luther King practiced loving his enemies, and began to win his war through words.

The Taliban feel the same way about their war as Mandela felt about his.
