New fans

I'd say it depends really.

We've always had out of town fans, I've got a guy from Yorkshire on one side of me and Scottish guy on the other. Last year it was 2 guys from South Wales.

If they been supporting the blues for years that's okay but I'd find it a bit strange anyone just starting supporting as of now or the last 12 months or something like that.

there's a difference between switching allegiances as an adult and someone finding a club or enjoying the Premier League for the first time.

And on an other note, i wonder how many people have Lakers shirts and Pats shirts on this thread. Im guessing a few.

And compare those people to people from LA and Boston who have grown up with those clubs and have those clubs as a central part of their lives (and I don't mean their internet lives) for as long as they can remember. Are you equating the two?

You won't like my simple answer, but unless you have strangely unique circumstances, simply yes.

This thread is going exactly the way it usually does, with ridiculously emotional rhetoric and cliche seeking to masquerade as intelligent, rational debate. I'll do my best to avoid replying further as the above sentence will be, to many, the ultimate insult (an attitude that is, centrally to my point of view, ridiculous).

Goodnight.

the Sheikh takeover was really the worst thing that could happen to a small-minded man like yourself.

You couldn't be more wrong. However, nice insults.

over the two epic posts you wrote i have never read so much up my own arse posts in my time on here, some of your others have been bad but these in here will take a lot of beating.

just my humble opinion of course!

Give over, anyone would think that most fans want us to be an exclusive club where only a select few are 'allowed' to support City.

The fact of the matter is that this was inevitably going to happen sooner or later, and personally I find it quite nice that people have embraced our club from other countries. It not only means more support, but more appeal and sales which all help in the long run.
These new fans may never have the same passion that most blues have but that doesn't mean you should think less of them, it's honestly like watching 2 kids on a playground argue sometimes on this board about who's the bigger blue.

So get off your high horses, we have always been known as a hospitable club with great fans and we treat guests to our stadium in a pretty good manner so why then treat our own fans/potential newcomers like crap?

Whether you agree with him or not, JMA always makes a compelling case and is never afraid to cut through any veil of sentiment and tell it like he sees it (a quality I admire in anyone).

In this case, as is quite typical, he absolutely hits the nail on the head.

He's sincere too, which can't be said of the individuals which many are pontificating over.

I'm glad to say i'll be one of those cringe worthy fans come sunday day. manchester flag, blue hair, the works. Oh yeah, and when I see beckham i'll be sure to point him out to de jong and shout GO FOR HIM!

it about an opinion he feels himself and obviously some others including yourself,i and many others do not have this opinion its narrow minded and disrespectful oh and pontificating i could not have choose such a better word than that to describe JMA!

I shouldn't have posted on here as it opens up a never ending debate that I have never got to the bottom of completely.

However, I have just received a PM and I thought I'd make this my last post on it.

I hope the person who sent it doesn't mind but I'll take an anonymous extract from it as I find it interesting.

I always thought you can't support a club unless you have that local connection, it just didn't seem right, I mean how could you. But then i realised, Something which you have not it seems, that it's utter bollocks and it's only football and hey, guess what, you can do what the fuck you want.

I say it is interesting because this phrase:

"it's only football, you can do what you want"

What in the mother mother fuck fuck?? Did i send you that as a PM? I'm sure i posted in on the main forum... LOL

Been reading this board for five years or so and rarely chime in, but felt this was appropriate.

Just because the fans in the video are American does not make them new fans who started supporting city because of the club's new-found wealth. I lived in San Francisco (from Boston originally) for five months and was at the pub in the video with all of those people for the FA Cup semi-final and final. Great mix of people originally from Manchester and people who for whatever reason, have identified city as the club they want to support, and most of them having followed the club through the downs as well as the ups.

When you're from America, you obviously don't have top-tier football to pay attention to at home, so you look abroad. Once I started following English football, I found that city was like a lot of the teams I have grown up supporting. Until 2004, the Red Sox hadn't won anything since 1918. Their most bitter rivals are the Yankees, who have plastic fans all over the world, and constantly win trophies. When I started following English football, this made me hate United. Everyone who doesn't know shit about football in America just goes on about how amazing Rooney is, but couldn't even recognize him on the street. I guess I'm saying I support city because city was for so long an underdog and a club that felt familiar to the teams I have supported all my life. That's my reason, and I'm sure everyone else has their own.

I've met a lot of fans of the old "top 4" teams in America who really didn't know anything about football or give a shit, but the city fans I meet actually follow the game and have a passion for the club. I hope that's encouraging. Figured I'd throw in my opinion since it seems like the guys in this video are getting judged by a bunch of people who will never meet them. Here's to a great season!

im a 'new' fan but to be honest im not a fan, i just follow city the only football team im a fan of is my country, i think any one can be a fan as long as your dedicated to it, you can't just claim to be a fan but not know any players and not know any history. think the more dedicated fans who ve been going longer should be the first to get season tickets etc. but let me tell you about my story LOL.

i was always good at footy, but never interested in a team, in fact i stopped watching all together, but couldnt get away people always asking which team you supporting and when you say you dont support a team they look at you like your a black man in poland, so one day i woke up in the morning and city had a takeover and then the transfer window happened blah blah blah.

so to cut a long story short if people ask me who i support i say city, but i dont claim to be an avid supporter or in love with the club and to be honest im not that patienet about the game, but i follow city a lot no all there players and know a bit of history, but im just following so i dont have to interact with people:) i say i support city and they leave me alone.

and btw i know a lot about the game had to with a dad like mine and if all footy supporters are like my dad there a waste of space :D
