Newcastle fans

I remember reading an article by Oliver Holt a few years ago about Newcastle and City. Wish I could find it now. It mentioned the differences in the support and loyalty of the fans. He tore the Geordies a new one.
Had a rosette once that said........DOYLE EATS MAGPIES.
That was the winning slogan on Piccadilly 261 for the LC final in '76.

Subjective, depends who they were up against doesn't it? I'm not aware of which big clubs woulhere were some really good sides around, but were not the champions of their country the previous year.dn't have qualified the "open trade" cities part to be fair, but again "the runners up cup" should tell you something about the level of prestige it was held in. Regardless despite the UEFA Cup being seen as the successor to it, that competition isn't even officially recognised by UEFA, so they don't even count it against a club's European record themselves(so they clearly don't see the UEFA Cup as a direct successor). For me it's a bit of a none starter using it to claim European success(even if you could consider 1 cup many moons ago a success which you can't) considering everything going against the claims it was "highly prestigious".

Perhaps I might see it differently had we won one of those, then again much like the European Cup Winners Cup it's nice to be able to say we won a European Cup but it would be embarrassing to make any more of it than that.

Do you not remember matches in the UEFA cup against such teams as Valencia, Juventus, Standard Liege, AC Milan, and Borussia Monchengladbach in the 70s? All very good teams at the time. In fact, the Juve team had the majority of their national squad iirc. Kicked us off the pitch, Gentile swapping shirts during the match, etc. There were some really good sides around, but were not the champions of their country the previous year. This was at the time that the dippers were successful. They didn't meet many really good teams to win "big ears" in that period.

I wasn't around in the 70s mate so wouldn't claim I remembered it, I do like to research some of these football claims though such as Newcastle being big(they are historically fairly big at least domestically anyway but not bigger than City) it's interesting what you can find out and how a lot of clubs sugar coat things(Liverpool and United for example).

I did say it depends who they were up against, also because of the lower prestige not all the big teams would prioritise that competition, just as some don't the Europa League or the League Cup these days.

Juve, Napoli and Liverpool for example were in it that year, just looking back at it now I noticed Hamburg even pulled out of the competition themselves at the quarter finals stage, which doesn't look great unless there was a good reason for it.

Newcastle's run was:

1st Round

Feyenoord Rotterdam
2nd Round
Sporting Clube de Portugal
3rd Round
Real Zaragoza (Spain)
Quarter-finals
Vitória de Setúbal (Portugal)
Semi-finals
Rangers FC
Final
Újpest FC (Hungary)

I think that proves my point, some good teams in there fair enough but not supporting the "tougher to win" shout not that year anyway. I'd say it was about the same as the European Cup Winners Cup but perhaps without the prestige perception behind it.

Probably depends on which period of time you are looking at. There are periods in City's history when the attendances have been very low. Prior to Mercer and Allison I believe. Wasn't around then, but sure I've seen some very low attendance figures for those days

The Geordies and Mackems crowds are amazing. To my mind we stayed strong because Utd were so vile that it was cool to be City. And football in the 90s, and the Manc scene (Northside etc) helped a lot. It was an era when it was very cool to be a City fan even if the football was terrible.

Have a guess what Rangers fans did to Newcastle after that defeat.

Was that the cup tie where Salano (I think) shoved Dunne(I think) over and scored.
It kicked off all over the City?
In the stands was arguably the loudest I've ever heard our fans.
I remember a big pub getting smashed up by fans trying to get in/out to fight each other.
Probably circa 2000?

Yeah I remember that game. It was 2002. We played really well with ten men, and were unlucky to lose. Great atmosphere though, and it kicked off everywhere afterwards.

yesterday it was a bit like the old days in ss 3rd tier, there fans was mouthy all game and then near the end, a couple of there fans tried to jump into the city fans, one was throwing punches but he got a few thrown back at him and he fell back into his own fans but got collared and thrown out. On facebook a few city fans said it kicked off outside the ground as well. but I walk up aston rd so didn't see any bother but talked to a couple of fans going that way and they said its getting worse with there fans now, thought they was better then this, and only rags and scousers acted like this, I even was called a manc bastard before game but it was because I called a Newcastle fan a sunderland fan but that was banter

There were a few of them getting a bit lairy on Ashton New Road after the game, but the police horses stepped in before it kicked off. Some gobby little twats amongst them though, teenagers acting like ten men after being on the gear all day.
