Non-League Football

Salford City ,Tues Nights, good support, good committee, and they need a new Cubhouse(local arsonist sorted the other)

I went to watch Accy Stanley a lot when they were non-league and I was under sixteen. It was £4 or £5 in and it was a good laugh. Too extortionate nowadays now they're in the Football League and I'm paying full adult prices. I went during the Save Our Stanley campaign though. Again, still a great laugh with the Stanley Ultras. They're brilliant fans.

I can only second what people have had to say about Maine Road FC so far. Though attendences are low there's a great community spirit, and though budgets are small for the level they attract exciting players and play attractive football.

I first went to watch them simply because they were local to where i was living, but i must admit i was quite taken with the name! I still go and see them when possible, but like others have said, it depends on what City are doing. If we're playing then it's a simple decision, but with kick-off times nowadays Saturday games can be either side of a 3pm Road fixture, and now we're back in the Europa League we'll mainly be playing on Sundays. Midweek fixtures in their division are on a Tuesday, too, which is handy.

Personally, i just like to see a game of football, and if it's not City it doesn't really matter whether it's Chelsea or Bolton Vets. There are a lot of good footballers at Vodkat League level, and plenty of banter in the stands. With many of the people at Maine Road being Blues, as well, it's an extra opportunity to talk City. The pies are bloody good, too!

I'd try and encourage anyone to get down to Brantingham Road. You don't have to go regularly, just give it a whirl, remember what it's like to get home on a Saturday having been fed, watered and seen a good game and still have change from £20! If not Road then whoever your local side might be. Saves you getting dragged to the Trafford Centre at least, and if you're interested most clubs will appreciate any extra pairs of hands, so it could be a chance to get involved at the grass roots of the game.

I'll third that. Like a few on here, I used to play for Maine Road and would encourage anybody looking for a game to watch to get to Brantingham Road as often as possible. I've not been able to get down for a couple of years now, and from what I gather there has been a few changes recently, but I'm sure they could still do with additional support and they deserve it - a well-run club, and a team that (I assume, still, knowing those in charge) not only plays good football, but also regularly punches above its weight in the league.

Excellently put and thanks! It is remarkable given the relatively high budget teams we play against.

Sh249, please PM me with your details. Through the excellent medium of Bluemoon, we're adding to our database of old players. It is something we have been trying to build up during the last year or so.

Easily the most attractive ground in Salford (or Trafford come to that!). One of the last quality grounds I ever played on...although Hough End was really my standard!

Wish you all the luck with re-building after that dreadful arson attack. How did Maine Road stalwart Neil Chappell do for you during his brief spell? Earlier in this thread, City fans in Perth, Aus say his currrent team there are top of their division.

My father Jim Grant used to play for Maine Road in the late seventies / early eighties. Anybody remember him?

Just seen Derek Barber. Obviously, he remembers Jim very well and was very appreciative of all the work he did with Maine Road Reserves. It isn't easy running our Reserves because the philosophy is very much more about giving playing time to youngsters who have the potential to get into the first team. It isn't necessarily about winning the league that they are in. For aspiring coaches who want to build up their C.V. that isn't ideal. We are looking for a manager for them now!!

Derek assumes that 'Jacko' on here, will be 'City-mad' Jacko and not the Steve jackson I referred to.

Sh249 has already been back to me with some more details, but if any of more of the ex-players or supporters of Maine Road FC would like to PM me with their contact details, I'll ensure they are kept up to date with developmentsat Brantingham Road.

seems a good thread for my first post, recently stepped down as first team manager at irlam fc in the nwcl.Ending a 10yr association as first team coach and the the last 4 as manager.I know exactly the amount of time effort and commitment that goes into running teams and i take my hat off to all the volunteers.however my future is completely sky blue,at 46years of age you will know the times that i have endured and shared with you.Have purchsed 5 season tickets for family stand today, cant wait.
My next priority/progect [buzz word at the moment] is to ressurect the irlam and cadishead osc.

Really good time to try and resurrect the Branch. What with the merger of the OSC and CSA being ratified this weekend and the obvious signs that we finally have a regime at City that wants to "Support the Supporters", then why not!?

As to Irlam....well done with all that you did there! I saw your game with Cheadle Town in 2008-09 at Park Road. Steve Brokenbrow had got Cheadle playing miles better football than his predecessor and it was a decent game. I thought Cheadle would go on to have a really decent 2009-10, but it didn't work out that way.

Enjoy your break from the intensity of managing, Manny. Enjoy City and a few pints before and after..I do! But, if you have the time and get withdrawal symptons, with City probably having few Saturday games , get yourself down to Brantingham Road to watch Maine Road FC..make yourself known to us..we'll have a good chat!

Glossop have done well, but they do I Believe now have the best Budget in th Vodkat League.....Nico

<splutters>...I can confirm that this is most definitely NOT the case! If only!

Glossop do, however, have the best pies in football..and that's OFFICIAL.

Hope to see some of you down at Surrey St on a blank Saturday

Whilst I am absolutely delighted with City's new arrangement with Hyde (really enjoyed watching the Ressies and occasional Youth game there and will now return - the Arena was rubbish!), there is always another side.

North-West Counties League Premier (same as us at Maine Road F.C.) side Nelson have just resigned from the league and, in effect, gone out of business. They were in the League proper (Third Division North) from 1920 to 1930, so it has been a gradual decline into oblivion. I met some of their committee people at their place last season and wonderfully hospitable people they were....there will be a few tears.

Shame Burnley couldn't see their way to dropping them a few quid from their parachute payment. It might have made all the difference.
