North Stand Construction Discussion

we don't all walk/live that way
No but There's plenty that stand and queue for a packed metrolink back into town that could easily have walked to town in the same time - granted not everyone is able to do the walk easily but for those that can i dont see why you wouldnt if its dry

There’s room to put a siding and bay platform in at the stadium so we could have dedicated double car trams running back and forth at peak times….to Piccadilly. It would be expensive to construct and the club may have to lease or buy a few additional trams ( but they could lease them back to GMPTA during the week etc).something needs to be done the present metrolink service is not even close to being fit for purpose But it should be a large part of the solution.

Why do we all have to walk into town?
He didn't say we all have to, he said he'd encourage people to and recomends it. After queueing twice for a tram I realised it was quicker and far less irritating to walk, I'd recomend it too, unless it's pouring. People can wait and complain about the trams , but whatever improvements are made it will still be quicker walking.

You don’t know what the the club is doing,or has done,or with whom,or when.

They will be aware of the problems and of the incompetence of the Metro operators.

To suggest that the club is in collusion with the council regarding parking protocols is ludicrous. Perhaps you should familiarise yourself with the legal responsibilities the club has to comply with on related matters.

The construction of the arena, North Stand and Hotel will require/ demand improvements/ solutions and they will come.

As a matter of interest where do you live ?

Try and be happy.

We do know, because it's mission statement is in the proposal documents.

I am privy to some of it, having been asked 12 months ago to discuss some of the transport issues and possible solutions with people at CFG.

Imagine my surprise that most didn't even have a clue why we had so many early leavers!!

As per my previous post, coming from Sale/ Alty. Thousands stood on platforms down the line all the way to Cornbrook for a tram change.

I use the car to try and avoid it, but usually takes me an hour and ten for an eight mile drive from 5pm, so I can try and find a spot to park by half six.

Happy enough with the designs, but you don't build a new housing estate without building a few new schools as well

Some unbiased views from people who are interested in property development, including sensible United fans', and people who have no interest in football at all. The proposal has had a mixed reaction on SSC-MCR.

Some posters think it looks good, other posters don't think it looks good. Valid reasons have been given for both points of view.

There are 1 or 2 silly jibes, but those aside, interesting reading, if anyone is interested?

From post 3,808 onwards.

The images so far aren't brilliant. Even the CGI's are fairly vague. No CGI of the stand internally for example and nothing from ground level.

It's a shame to be losing the stadium aesthetic but you'd still get that from the south, east and west when looking at the ground. And it will be one hell of an imposing stand/block as you come down from the north towards it. They've had to create something that also functions on non-footballing days, where you don't feel like you're just hanging around an empty football ground. They've balanced that pretty well considering they're very restricted in terms of what they can do and the amount of space. Hopefully more CGI's are revealed soon alongside the planning application and they'll convince more people. It would have been nice to just have this monster North Stand in front of you as you walk up, without being hidden behind the other elements. But I still think it will look epic.

Transport wise - it's all been said. It needs sorting but it's not easy. This country doesn't like to think strategically, and when it does it's usually fucked up. City can only offer money. We can't do a privatised solution. What should have happened, alongside the collar site masterplan (which could have simply modelled different uses and transport impacts), is a strategic transport solution in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, Highways, National Rail and the City Council to work out what could be done and then cost some schemes and look for developments to help fund them.

Instead it's all piecemeal. But I dread to think what it will be like when a match starts/finishes around a concert time. It's going to be carnage.

I'm sure people know that they can walk if they want

It's weird that though, isn't it? We know Abu Dhabi and MCC are all over each other with the Manchester Life development, and the Arena is going to bring in hundreds of millions a year to the City.

Why would MCC not be all for the idea of collaborating on transport links?

General impression I got is that they just don't have the number of trams to spare that city would need to even come close to making it reasonable on a match day. Maybe it'll change for this! This convo was the best part of a year ago so we'll see. Things could have changed.

There has been this CGI doing the rounds showing the extended two tiered North Stand from inside the ground, I'm not sure whether it's official, leaked or fan made though.

I would imagine that can be sorted with a "how much does a tram cost?" and based on how many more are needed we pay for them and fund the driver's salary for 5 years. It really is as simple as that. That would be a reasonable contribution to pay and is directly relevant to our scheme. Beyond that, the amount of cash coming in from the service would cover maintenance/salary etc beyond the 5 year period. We can buy a load more buses too.
