A stadium is not just a venue for a football match. It is a home, a place of emotions and inspiration and it can play a significant part in a club’s success. A close-knit fan base in a tight stadium can make a difference to team performance. For a Premier League club it plays a major role in the way a club projects itself to the world. Fans in emerging football countries such as the US and China select their teams on image and authenticity and a club’s stadium plays a crucial part in this.

The Etihad Stadium is filled with noise throughout match days, with much chanting and singing led by the Club’s fans. The new expanded North Stand will be accessed directly from City Square. For the fans it's important in the expansion and alteration of the North Stand that the existing atmosphere isn’t lost. Whilst the atmosphere is driven by the fans the stadium has a role in inspiring the atmosphere; projecting the atmosphere for the benefit of the players on the pitch and reflecting it for the benefit of the fans in the stands. Expanding these areas where fans can make a lot of noise can make the stadium less reliant on the noise being generated by one group of supporters.

The seperate architecture of the North Stand has been developed to promote this. The newly expanded stand will have a unique scale and character. Our proposal seeks to improve on this character by unifying and connecting the Club Tier to the new 'Upper Tier', seamlessly linking these fan groups, and covering them with a unique roof with its own geometry. We are looking to balance the benefits of the modern seating bowl of a ‘bar of soap’ type stadium, in the existing lower and club tiers, with the traditional cruciform arrangement of dispersed stands in the geometries of the different upper tiers.

The roar of the crowd is special at the Etihad Stadium, in the new North Stand, the non-lined roof will reflect the noise back into the crowd encouraging the crowd to make yet more noise. At the same time the shape of the roof projects the sound forward onto the pitch. The home team will benefit from the constant encouragement. The away team will try to get the job done, but the effects of the crowd will get through.

Our proposal will look to amplify this further, with the vertical walls at the back and sides of the tier, reflecting noise back to the crowd and pitch, these areas along with the non-lined roof have been designed to keep the sound within the ground for the benefit of the fans in the stands and the players on the pitch. This diagram shows how the vertical planes at the back and sides of the tier, and the underside of the roof are used to capture the atmosphere within the new North Stand and reflect it back towards the other fans and players

The club have well and truly shafted the fan groups with this one. the consultation was the same as with the badge. Tick a box and do what we want. If it wasn’t so predictable, you’d laugh about it.

Now that is encouraging. I’ve said before that we need sound reflecting surfaces and they’ve clearly got that.
 
Building a stand with acoustics and the roof in mind sounds great. It’s pointless though if you fill the stand with corporate sections and people who in the main don’t sing.

The 1894 group and our fans have been shafted on a lot of this in my opinion. Ill probably told im moaning, but I can’t get over the section at the front
