North Stand Construction Discussion

Anyone else surprised by the amount of bracing on the middle section? The city hall and open void above it is not quite as open as the plans suggest. Unless the red ones are temporary.
I was surprised to see anything there at all TBH, that's probably down to the sheer scale of it all though as I can struggle fitting it all in. The red bits definitely look like temporary braces until they've tied more of it all together.

They've got to be, surely. At least the ones at the base level. They'd foul the main route in and the open space, and while you can indeed get under and around them no problem due to the scale, you'd have folk hanging off them in crowds, and they'd just look out of place.
It is the fact they have the red oxide paint on them that's throwing me, if they are temporary why coat them at all. I'd be disappointed if Happold's haven't found a way to omit them.

On another note. Temporary bracing, temporary drainage, temporary propping, temporary laydown areas etc. I think the amount of temporary material and works on this can sometimes go unnoticed, but is pretty damn significant. And all made to measure too, be interesting to see what happens to it all and how it is reused after. There is an in depth article in that alone.

Have to say the middle bit threw me, this week, as that bit can be done during the season at any point. I would have thought they would have focused on removing the back cables so they can get the piling back in for the foundations underneath the cantilever, so they can finish the towers. Maybe they want all the propping under the roof fully finished just in case the tension transfer needs a back-up.

I am guessing they are starting in the middle as opposed to either side of a tower and working towards the other to leave themselves room for the piling to the back of the towers.

A bit of therapeutic distraction.

The first few images are over the existing stand layout, use that to get and keep your bearings. It is easier to track when it gets to the proposed.

The green are the existing supports, the darker green will be removed, the lighter (cables) will stay.

The purple, steel towers around the piers, from the ground up. Broken purple line, the cantilevered overhangs of the towers above. The darker purple in the middle, the new central bay seen in the last drone video. Then works through all the different levels, for tracking of where the elements built so far sit all the way up.

Sterling work again, I'm constantly amazed just how good the videos and stills you produce are. Do you need permission to fly around the site or a permit, especially the shots from inside the stadium? What is it you use?
No permissions needed as such as the CAA ( civil aviation authority ) control the airspace and they have no restrictions in the area. You have to have a CAA operator id displayed on top of the drone, but then everything else you need depends on the size of the drone. If the drone weighs less than 250g ( DJI minis etc) you need nothing else and are quite unrestricted on where you can fly as long as you keep it in sight at all times. The only other thing to follow is “the drone code” which is basically don’t fly near anyone that it would put them in danger and basically don’t be a nuisance.
Bigger drones brings more regulations. You have to have a CAA flyer id and then you can only fly 150m from people and NOT over residential or commercial areas so areas like the Etihad would not be allowed. You have to do a qualification called A2 C of C which then gives you permission for residential and commercial areas and reduces the distance down to 50m from people. You can then become a member of FPVUK which then reduces that distance down to 30m as you fly under a regulation called article 16. That is what I fly under as I have all of the above and my drone is 800g.
Insurance isn’t compulsory unless you get paid for work.
i have full commercial insurance and public liability insurance.
Most YouTube droners you see will use DJI mini drones as they are less than 250g and have no restrictions.
