North Stand Construction Discussion

The "bubble" roof at Manchester Victoria Station is made of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) panels, a light but strong plastic used to bring in light to the station concourse.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Material: The roof is composed of approximately 400 translucent, plastic panels made from ETFE.
  • Purpose: These panels allow natural light to flood into the station concourse.
  • Design: The roof was designed by architects BDP, who also carried out the award-winning Piccadilly Station refurbishment.
  • Scale: The roof covers an area of 15,000 square meters.
  • Construction: The panels were created using computer modelling technology.
  • Other Uses: ETFE is also used in the domes at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Looks great, but it’s in Manchester. Give me a date when you won’t have rain bouncing off it?

It is a lot lot louder than a glass roof though. Particularly in the wind. The rooms facing it beware.
In the recent cgi’s the supporting trusses are a lot finer than those over Victoria Stn in jrb’s post , how the hell do they clean / maintain it ? Or will the final structure be more like the Victoria one ??

Just a guess. City might use Vector-Folitec to do the fan zone roof?

They did Victoria Station. And they've done numerous other buildings, stadiums, etc around the World. Some roofs look amazing. Quite a few look like the proposed fan zone roof. Scroll along their work at the bottom of the page. MORE PROJECTS.

With City publicising the 84569 attendance v Stoke on the OS it got me a bit giddy. Maybe one day we will see the Etihad ‘finished off’ and the ES & CBS expanded to join up with the two ends. I really do hope so and it would make our stadium truly iconic and a fitting tribute to the club, its owners and us, the fans.
Imagine an Etihad crowd of 84570 v Stoke in the FA Cup Q Final in the year 2034..

Rain noise has only been found to be a problem requiring remedy in a very small number of buildings for which Texlon® ETFE cladding forms part of the building envelope. If rain noise is found to be problematic, noise intensity can be easily minimized by installing a patented Texlon® RS rain suppression mesh. It can be easily retrofitted to any installation

And just imagine how much revenue it would bring in too ;-)
