North Stand Construction Discussion

Once the North stand and fan zone are finished, and the paving, landscaping, trees, planting, and street furniture have been completed, that area around the Etihad stadium will look a lot less barren and dull. The Etihad stadium and Etihad Campus does need more colour.

Meanwhile, at the home of our sister club, NYCFC, this is what they are proposing after they got fed up with there massive car parks



It's good that they recognise the importance of the train station across the ground.

Not like our transport !

As wonderful as many will think this development is, I my opinion, it's a bloody monstrosity. We've seen from the Rags, that simply bolting on additions to an already basic construction, will never produce anything that is either aesthetically pleasing or remotely functional. Just trying to get out of that new stand if your are sat at the rear and centre of the aisle will probably be at least 15 to 20 minutes! Just that shit design alone will further exacerbate fans saying 'sod that' and leaving early rather than getting stuck in that queue.

If they were in any way serious about the fan experience, and complete new stadium should have been built to rival the Allianz, but this is purely around monetising every seat in what is fast becoming Old Scaffold Mk2. And if you disagree, then ask yourself how, if it looks dated now, is it going to look in 2040 and beyond.

You have a point but it’s not possible to have a brand new stadium every 50 years or so. At some point you have to say this is where we live and expand from there. Our stadium is certainly not the newest looking but it’s nowhere near the oldest looking. It is primarily built to make money which unfortunately has to be the first concern these days.

At least we have plenty of room to expand…others are just stuck.

If the club are still going ahead with it, the plan is to plant a row of Spruce trees around the Etihad, similar to the mockup Lexstar has posted. There are 3 different varieties of spruce trees planted close together opposite the East stand entrance. I’m assuming the club will pick one of the 3 spruce trees to plant around the ground. I posted a picture of the Spruce trees a long time ago on the Etihad Campus thread. They will be a lot bigger, taller, and more mature now. I’ll take another picture at the next home game.

Putting aside the appearence and aesthetics of it (fair take obviously), what do you think would be different to the function and access and egress, were it to have been a complete new build compared to the additions?
 
Preparing the area to be tarmacked/paved/resurfaced??

Valid points to an extent.

A new stadium was never going to happen with City being locked into the lease of the Etihad, and after all the money the club has spent developing and expanding the Etihad.

Yes, Sheikh Mansour could have funded a new stadium, but the costs as shown by the new Spurs stadium, and United’s proposed circus tent stadium run into billions of pounds. As it is, the Etihad has been expanded to 62,000 for under £1bill. (I stand corrected on the figure) Building the North stand after the Commonwealth Games, expanded the South stand, and expanding the North stand.

Let’s be honest. No mater what City do with the Etihad, how they’ve expanded it, and what it now looks like, it will never look as shit as Old Trafford, which will be United’s ground for many years to come before their proposed new stadium ever see’s the light of day.
