something about air flow...got the fire roaring.

As per previous poster sometimes it set on fire. So did the chimney (Chimley)

It concentrated a greater air flow at the base of the fire.

Cooking a full English breakfast over a coal fire during the power cuts.
Eiderdowns.

What was the purpose for doing this? Slightly before my time but vague memories of seeing this done?

As others have said mate, maximising the airflow, it was called “drawing the fire”, multi-fuel stoves and log burners have similar ‘in-built’ adjustable air vents to do the job now.

Sneaking into Lees Brewery forecourt on a Thursday night before the following morning deliveries and grabbing a few cases of Breaker and Red Stripe to sell on jubilee Park on Friday and Saturday night.
Similar to the chocolate factory on the Heywood industrial park where my bargain priced Mars bars flew out at break and lunch times.
Shame security guards and CCTV became a thing...

It was breaking and entering actually. Yeah, I was a bit of a scallywag at one time long ago before I saw the error of my ways and became a fine upstanding member of society.
