I don't think you can separate the finance and the politics in this case.

because of the ownership model, laporta has to keep the supporters onside. don't forget that real have spent extremely heavily, and he will want to hide the fact that barca need to sell in order to sign villa. renewing eto'o's contract would be pretty expensive in itself. so it suits laporta to make out that eto'o is leaving of his own accord to get a big pay-day.

eto'o knows this, and is making life very awkward for him by putting the emphasis on the loyalty clause, he knows barca want rid first and foremost because of the money it would cost them to keep him for the final year of his contract , and is probably a bit unhappy with the stories that guardiola wants rid of him personally. of course, he wants money that he thinks he is entitled to.

either way, he has nothing to lose by putting this pressure on barca.

clever lad. let's hope he's clever enough to realize that our offer will not be on the table next year.
