Eto'o would be "delighted" to join City

Samuel Eto'o would like to stay at Barcelona next season but would be "delighted" to join Manchester City if he can't agree a new two-year contract with the Spanish champions, the player's agent said today.

Eto'o has one year remaining on his current deal with the Catalan giants and Josep Maria Mesalles is unhappy that the club appear to be forcing Eto'o out against his wishes in spite of the offer of a contract extension.

"On 2 June, the club called a meeting and I was told by (Barcelona sporting director) Txiki Begiristain and (director of football) Raul Sanllehi that due to a technical decision, Samuel does not feature in the club's plans next season," said Mesalles in a press conference today. "We then had another meeting and I was told once again that Samuel was not in their plans for next season."

Mesalles is keen to speak to Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola to clarify the situation.

"Guardiola said at the end of the season that he was delighted with Samuel, so I don't know what has changed," he said. "My mistake was to not verify this information and we need to find out what the coach wants, because he is the one who ultimately decides."

Barcelona offered Eto'o the new deal last night, but Mesalles is unsure as to the club's motives.

"I don't know if they really want Samuel to stay of if they just want to make money out of him. He would be delighted to stay if they want him and we will study their offer if it is serious, but if they don't want him we will do all we can to help Samuel find a new club. In theory he wanted to play in the Champions League, but if Manchester City have an offer accepted, we would be delighted to go there."

Eto'o scored 35 goals as Barcelona claimed an unprecedented treble of the Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League last season, and is reportedly the target of a £25m transfer bid by Manchester City. The player is now on holiday with his family and is planning to return for pre-season training on 20 July.

"He will arrive in Barcelona on 19 July and will be ready for the first day of training and the medical exams the next day," Mesalles said

Hey guys just copied this from the men site a comment from someone.

Come on people, have a proper look at the situation. After working in the football industry as an agent for that past 8 years i can see Barca are trying to secure the signature of another striker before letting eto'o go - Which is what most football Clubs do. Villa and Co will be who Barca are looking at, and if they dont manage to bag him and get rid of Eto'o they will be left with an understrenghted team, with the fans turning on the club (not a good time as they need the money from season tickets etc) So Barca wont palm off Eto'o until they have bagged another with similar standards.

For city its a waiting game. They would of been told about the situation at Barca by Barca and will hold to see what happens. Its no great loss if City don't get Eto'o as they currently have enough in that area of the team. City have shown Barca what they will offer Eto'o, so then Barca can say to the player, we cannot match City's offer, so you may as well join them, it happens alot of time.

Football is going through a transformation period, the new era of football is here and teams need to adjust to it, Utd have been planning for the past few seasons as have Inter and Barca. Madrid will be madrid, buy the best players of last season.. but thats where they go wrong.. they buy the best of LAST season.

A lot of city fans are already getting Tevez printed on the back of shirts, but be very aware... there is a third club also in the running for him that asked be un-named, and from what i am hearing from my colleagues it is either Liverpool or Arsenal! Tevez wont be going to Chelsea, as there is a gentlemans agreement between the two regarding Sturridge. Chelsea get sturridge is Chelsea back down on Tevez. A friend of a friend says city will be finished spending by the 15th July as Mark Hughes wants a settled squad he can work with.

I think everyone needs to spend a month as an agent so you understand how things are done. The papers sell stories, they sell you things you want to hear

That alone shows its either A) Bollox, or B) agents are as thick as footballers.

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

just got this off the net

Eurosport - Tue, 30 Jun 12:40:00 2009

Barcelona have to make up their mind whether to keep Samuel Eto'o or to sell him, according to the Cameroon striker's agent.

"The player wants to stay and complete the last year of his contract," Jose Maria Mesalles said.

"If Barca don't want him they should say so, so we can pursue the player's future in a professional manner.

"The club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him. Guardiola has not told the player he is not required."

Eto'o has a contract with Barca until 2010, but Mesalles said he did not receive an offer of an extension until almost midnight on Monday when the European champions offered him a two-year extension until 2012, on the same salary.

He accused Barca of leaking stories to the media that cast Eto'o in a bad light and said that if the club had reached an agreement with Manchester City to sell him, Eto'o would be happy negotiate.

"If they have a serious offer from Manchester City, and if they want to continue with this negotiation we could be interested," Mesalles added.

"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal."

Speculation over Eto'o's future escalated over the weekend when Barca president Joan Laporta said that Eto'o had received a 'stratospheric offer' from another club that would make him the best-paid player in the world.

Manchester City are reportedly offering Eto'o a five-year contract, and Barca a transfer fee of 25 million euros plus variables.

Eto'o was Barca's top scorer with 30 league goals last season as they won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.

its in barcas hands now ???

Re: Samuel Eto'o [merged]

that guardian article is what we needed to hear!! i was wondering when they'd come out saying good about city, for me, that's the icing on the cake, if he's coming he needs to be seen as happy at coming to city instead of unhappy about leaving barca.

There is no news, because all the main issues concern parties aside from City.
It may also explain why Spursmad, Ajay, other respected posters, my own sources for info have nowt to say.

Only sticking to their belief that Eto'o will get done.

Sturridge can be used is a negotiating chip with chelsea up until the date of the tribunial

For what? Thought he was a free agent!

A player under the age of 24 can't leave on a free to another club when out of contract due to the bosman ruling. A fee, albeit smaller will still have to be paid and a tribual will have to take place for City and Chelsea to agree a fee, we'll probably get a couple of million out of it. I think Coventry get about 25% of the fee due to a sell on clause in his contract at City.
