I would be content with Ned instead of Dunne, Zab instead of Richards, Tevez instead of Etuhu and Kompany instead of De Jong things then might be a bit different.
Exactly how I see our current strongest back four.
Brucie's reference to Richards as "the jogger" couldn't be more appropriate - lack of effort, poor attitude, poor technique... you name it Richards ticks all the boxes.
I still can't believe he's still keeping Zabaleta out of the side. Zabaleta was really effective going forward at Barnsley, and did well defensively - all while being played out of his natural postion so Richards can jog around aimlessly, and occasionally get skinned on the right flank.
Richards revelled in his own hype, took his foot off the gas and is now nothing more than a paper weight - which we have to carry through each game.
It really frustrates me to see a player of Zabaleta's quality play second fiddle to someone who takes his place for granted, and has the big "I am" attitude. Zabaleta is currently superior to Richards in every department (bar a short sprint of 6 yards). His desire, graft, determination, and technique are all superior to Richards'. It's also worth mentioning that he actually has the ability to pass and cross - which for a full back is quite important.
With regards to Dunnie...
He's been a great servant to the club, but in the interest of becoming a successful and consistent side he has to be replaced. It's unfortunate, but he's quickly becoming a liability at the back. The sooner we sign Lescott the better.
Tevez over Etuhu goes without saying.
And personally, I think Kompany has proved to be twice the defensive midfielder De Jong has. He's much more reliable, stronger in the tackle, gives us more of a driving force through the middle, and has much more of a presence than Nigel. So hopefully when he's back to full fitness he'll get the starting slot he deserves.
I just hope that we can plug the gaps at the back before the 15th - it's vital that start the season strong and build some momentum.
