Oldham Athletic thread

Asians are more than likely too busy watching Cricket or supporting the rags or the dippers.
There is a sizeable dipper support amongst the Asian community in Oldham. They even organised an open top bus tour round parts of the town when they won the covid league

I'm Indian and a Blue for two days shy of 42 years. My Dad loved football too and was a lifelong East Bengal supporter.

Fair play mate, I wasn't making a generalisation if that's how it's come across, just from my own experience.

I think there's a long-standing interest in football in Kolkata (Calcutta) and Bengal. I can remember being surprised to see a statue outside Eden Gardens of a player in the old style pose with a ball in one hand.

To be fair mate you were making the point that Asians are supporting big teams not small provincial teams like Oldham and Bury, you're right IMHO and haven't made an assumption.

I have met many Asians in Bradford, who support one of the two cheeks of the same arse, and a few, who support the Bantams

The statue is of Gostho Pal, one of the greatest Indian footballers of all time. Can remember my late Dad pointing it out to me on a visit there. Pal played for Mohun Bagan, who are East Bengal's bitter rivals and was the first captain of India. Kolkata was capital of India for a while under British rule and football was established through the City and beyond. It's a real football hotbed and derbies can have attendances of 80,000 plus.

Thanks for that information. The wonders of the internet allowed me to see the statue again. He's actually dribbling a ball rather than holding it. I must have been getting him mixed up with another famous statue but not sure which ?
