The closest thing to Cannavaro I've seen.

It is conceivable that this time next summer we will have realised that none of our current 4 central defenders are good enough for an elite club; Demichelis will be closer to 40 than 30, Kompany can't afford another mediocre season, Mangala is seemingly too chaotic to be relied on, and Denayer has never had to defend against quality opposition regularly, so it could be that he isn't quite up to it and he may prove to be a better right back/midfielder anchor.

If we can get this fella for £10-£15m with the rest of his value neutralised by the money owed on Negredo, we should because as it stands we lack a player who loves the simple art of defending, ala Terry and Vidic.

If we sort the defence out, we win the title back, and probably advance Europe; the fact Joe Hart has consistently been our MOTM in the Champions League over the past 4 years shows that we have just simply aren't good enough at the back.

Even VK at his peak cost us games at that level; ducking under Ronaldo's last minute shot against Real away, then losing Messi so Demichelis had to bring him down against Barca at home in 2013/14 prove that he isn't quite top draw. Looking at Pique against us last year, widely regarded as overrated defensively, yet he looked a class above Kompany in every regard.

We need something different moving forward, and Otamendi would be a good place to start.
Bit harsh that

People say this but I wonder how much you actually watched them?

Also since Otamendi has since gone on to be recognised as an incredible CB and put in MOTM performances shutting out Messi and Real Madrid while Manga has struggled, perhaps it was Otamendi who made Mangala look good by mopping up all his mistakes.

Not to mention Mangala was 21/22 - so there was a lot of hype just because of his young age.

He tackled Messi a few times, very well, but was too short of pace to get in a block in when Barca scored. Bilbao's cb tackled Messi quite a lot the other night.

As for shutting out Real Madrid, he was left floundering when they got a pen (which they missed) & was bitched by Pepe in the air for the corner which they scored from.

I don't know who started these stories, but there have been exaggerations made re his performances in Spain. He has clearly done well there, but not as outstanding as some suggest, & it is not the Premier League.

Hopefuly he can adapt, but it is by no means certain he will be as effective here.

Is anyone having this?

He's been linked with the scum all summer?

It's come out of fucking nowhere

Find this deal so strange. Not heard a peep from the English press. It's like it's all been made up to try and make us bid, I really don't get it.

If it does indeed turn out he's coming to us then I will be bitterly disappointed for a few reasons. Firstly I think Mangala is younger and having only been at the club 12 months deserves a chance to show he can cut it. Beyond that I think it will be a knee jerk reaction to a poor season and isn't really the sort of thing I'd associate with Txiki and the people who run City - or indeed from Pellegrini. They are in my eyes much more forward thinking than to make a call like this. Finally, as others have said, if we are going to give up on Mangala, then I would MUCH rather we went after John Stones than any other centre half in Europe. But then if we're swapping Mangala for Otamendi it's because we want a ready made centre half rather than a young player with potential.

Still think this is all smoke and mirrors and we aren't going to touch our back 4 this summer but I can't ignore the noises coming out of Spain.

The press wrongly assumed he meant the rags when he told his teammates that he was going to Manchester.
Otamendi cleared it all up by stating (according to Google translate), "I said I was going to Manchester, not fucking Stretford "
