Seeing as Valencia were struggling to actually pay us the money they owed us it does make some sense. This way we "get" all the Negredo money payed off in one chunk, albeit as a "saving" on Otamendi rather than physical cash in hand. If Otamendi had been a Sevilla player, and we'd paid £32m for him we'd actually have to hand £32m over, and we'd still be struggling to get our money off Valencia. It extricates both City and Valencia from a difficult situation which had the potential to drag on and become embarrassing.

Agree Matty.
Effectively we either accepted their offer or forced this transaction because of VFC's financial problems.
Something happened somewhere where we were running scared that they were likely to default on their regular payment plan for Negredo.
Who knows, maybe their bank would not extend their ''loan'' whilst they had a recurring cash flow debt on their monthly outgoings but why risk a bad debt when we can get value with a player ?
From a financial point of view (ie non football) we could sell on Otamendi to get our money back straight away.
So another example of a club being absolutely financially sound but UEFA's crap rules forcing them to make financial decisions they really don't need to make.
