Outside Maine Road...6th November 1971....3-3 Derby Day Pictures

I think Mcllroy just got the one goal on his utd debut, still quite an achievement for a 17 year old tbf.what a match to make your debut, away at maine rd in front of 63k fans..probably the biggest crowd he ever played in front of in his whole career...

Interestingly, he also scored for City on his debut, his only goal for us..against Coventry City.
You could be right about McIlroy scoring one - my memory fades a bit with age. I was at that Coventry game too. A guy ran into the back of my car and damaged the hatchback. Exhaust fumes were leaking into the car so I had to drive all the way back to Manchester with all the windows open. Good job it was a sunny day.

There wasn't any formal segregation then, most fans just went & stood where it felt safe. In practice however the rags tended to gather at the Platt Lane end of the Kippax, encouraged to do so by the police. I well remember that match and as was usual for me & my mates we stood in the Kippax with our rag mates. Same for the return at the Swamp later in the season. That was what we did in those days & we had to take whatever came. Lol.
That November game was MacIlroy's debut for the rags & he was only 17. He scored twice I think, & I couldn't believe what was happening. Fortunately Buzzer scored a late equaliser, in what was a cracking derby (for neutrals !).
That was the first season of the North Stand opening(all standing) and most of the "The Kippax Boys" went in there for that one season ,then it became an all seater .

To be honest the pictures remind me how horrible it was back then, football was the outlet, money was tight but football was affordable and an outlet, how times have changed. It was possible that this period was the start of violence at football. Yes and the Boys of the Kippax were in the North Stand, for this game.
We are the north stand
We are the north stand
We are the north stand Manchester.

The violence was there already in the 60s , with the "usual suspects" prominent. It was merely a continuation into the 70s. The London firms were active, as were the Dippers and their mates called Stanley, Leeds fans being Leeds fans (cunts), and, surprisingly, Forest fans, who were mainly rockers rather than mods.
Fortunately, I could run fast in those days!
By the mid 70s (my mid 20s), I'd moved to a spot over the tunnel in the Kippax to the right of the half way line. My seat in EL304 is in around the same spot. I'm now with the Hell's Grandads firm.

Strangely I can't recall standing in the North Stand before the seats went in. I stuck with my usual spot in the Kippax. I stood there many times as a lad when it was the old open Scoreboard terrace and when my son was young we usually sat in the North Stand. It easier with him only being a nipper. Used to stand him on the seat so he could see as most of us stood up anyway. He watched his first derby from there, which was also the last at Maine Road.

Tonics, Sylvesters, star jumpers, football jumpers, hoop socks, platforms, CB Badge on my Crombie with a velvet collar, those days.
Winter, Crombie with Lancashire rose badge on breast pocket, red hanky sticking out of the pocket, blue maroon and white wool scarf round neck, Levi's and docs. Spring and summer, Harrington ,Ben Sherman shirt, prince of Wales check trousers and brogues, wool scarf tied to wrist silk scarf in belt loop. OMG I must have looked a right twat!

When the North Stand was finished being built it was all standing for one full season, I can only think the club could not afford the seats ?. The atmosphere was so good, all the Kippax boys moved in for the one season, and we had a lot of fun. The only thing was, the Police used to push us forwards in the main block, which was to the right under the new electronic scoreboard,(looking towards the pitch) they wouldn't let us stand behind the tunnels, you could in the other blocks, but not the one with all the crazy gang. The sound generated was incredible, I think if we had stayed with standing in the North Stand, our fortunes could have been so different, and I think we would have attracted more fans, due to the great atmosphere it generated, what a season.

Made me laugh,

The fashion we thought was great doesn't age well:
