Buy a vintage mechanical watch, there are a available in many styles. They are distinctive and not very common and will give you your own sense of identity. Plus if/when you have children/grandkids they will get to inherit an antique that they can pass on to the next generation.

Bought while serving in Vietnam i think. Best bit is when he's told if he wears it once it will half the value.

With a budget of about 1k I’d be looking at an Oris Aquis diver. You can get a brand new one for around 1.5k if you could stretch to that or for a grand you would get a very very good pre owned one.

Automatic, 300m water resistance, reliable , accurate, and very comfy to wear. You can literally wear it anywhere and they’re not so big that they look daft with a long sleeved shirt.

Omega seawater diver300 is the perfect choice but new you’re looking at 4.5k and a good second hand is still way above your budget but they are worth every penny.

Totally agree about Oris. Really high quality watches for not that much money. Definitely up there from a quality perspective, only less expensive.

That old hippy knew damn fine well what he was doing, he kept every part of that watch from receipts to outer sleeve and never put it on, kept it in a safe deposit box for 40 years, hello retirement.
