Paris Saint-Germain (A) - CL | Post-Match Thread

Don't know if we can really split our efforts and go full pelt for the league and CL this season. Total commitment and focus with our form players against Chelsea and we only won with a deflection after two awful shots. Change a couple players and with a slight drop in intensity we're vulnerable. I'd play the rotation players with a couple youngsters in champions league and see where that gets us. Wouldn't be the worst thing even if we drop into Europa, we'd be heavy favorites and winning may give us the foothold and confidence we need in Europe.
Common, what are you talking about. Our target is always about winning all biggest possible trophies. Those thinking is for other clubs that we don't need to name. So please remove it from your thought and enjoy the journey.

Pep is 100% Champions league manager, he doesnt want fuck all to do with the Thursday night cup.

Confidence we need in Europe? WTF?
We have played in the CL for the past ten seasons; the only English club to do so.
We have reached the knock-out stage for the past eight seasons.
We have reached the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
If we don't already have "confidence in Europe" then we should give up.

We just need a reliable goal scorer on the biggest occasions. We can beat anybody but we don’t put enough games to bed by missing chances.

And because of a clear issue with Sterling on and off the field, with our desire to secure a new contract, Pep apologises by starting him in the CL final. That, for me, was a clear attempt to show how much he is valued and try to get pen on paper.

Why do people write fantasy instead of just listening to what the man says and watching the games?

We couldn't create a goal against Chelsea with Fernandinho at CDM. In the league game the only person who created anything was Sterling, and once again we couldn't break them down as soon as we fell behind with Rodri playing there. Both defensive midfielders got run around and made to look absolutely shite by the Kante-Jorginho-Mount midfield, with Fernandinho in particular having one of his worst games in a City shirt.

You don't need to write these little fan fictions or guess, Guardiola told everyone before the Champions League final that the inability to break them down previously was why he brought Gundogan back to the 6 position and brought in another attacker - the one who'd caused Chelsea all sorts of problems scoring and winning a penalty 3 weeks earlier.

Do you need pace if there’s 10 men behind the ball ?
They didn't have 10 men behind the ball and they didn't park the bus. The front 3 offered very little in defence. We were so slow in transition that they were constantly able to get 6 men back to defend before we created an opportunity

Hakimi's trolling Grealish and the dailymail are loving it. Sometimes your country men are your worse enemies.

There's so much more to worry about in the world than a bit of harmless teasing being repeated in a newspaper.

The only thing that can happen is Grealish gets a bit more fired up for the return match. That's it. The world isn't going to end because people see Hakimi taunting someone over a match most neutrals thought PSG got outplayed in.

Huh, they played better overall, really?! What game were you watching?!
they won 2-0 put the ball in the net twice and limited us to how many clear chances?

their full backs were amazing

The template for beating City has been the same for a while, and tried by multiple teams: defend like demons and hit us on the break. Fortunately it generally doesn't work because teams aren't good enough to do it for 90+ mins but PSG have the resources to do it better than most other teams. Their second goal was a textbook example of that.

A bit of luck (Raz and Bernie both hitting the crossbar, for example) helps as well, of course.

If we played that game 10 times I reckon we win at least 7 of them. Looking forward to the return match!

It would help, but most of the games we lose aren't actually settled by a reliable goalscorer. Obviously Son usually bags against us but Kane doesn't. Fernandes has one penalty against us (and his record against the other big sides is awful too). Liverpool's front three usually cause us problems but honestly the difference maker is usually not even a forward player.

Players that have scored against us in (fairly) recent big game losses include:
  • Idrissa Gueye
  • Kai Havertz
  • Hakim Ziyech x2
  • Marcos Alonso
  • Luke Shaw
Going back to 19/20 and you start seeing names like McTominay, Fabinho, Bergwijn, Matić, Cornet etc.

How come other teams manage to beat us without reliable goalscorers getting on the scoresheet?
