Before the CL final, there was an interview with Pep and Camel Gob where Pep was saying about the need to refresh teams regardless of winning things. I'm not sure we did enough of that last summer, possibly down to the issues of trying to get Kane, but also with the age of the midfield.
This summer we're definitely losing Fernandinho and there are questions over Gundogan. KdB is struggling to play more than 70 minutes, presumably as he gets no rest and there's a mid-season world cup to contend with next season. I'd like to see Foden in the middle a lot more, but that depends on Grealish getting to grips with his role.
Do we therefore need another player in there, I'd say yes. A real Fernandinho replacement would be nice, as otherwise there's no rest for Rodri, but I think we need someone to rotate with KdB/Bernardo. We could play almost 60 games next season, so even with one more first-time player, that would mean 40 starts each, plus any sub games etc. Even taking the Carabao out of it, you could be lookin at 30+ games and then there's however many international games.
Could Pogba fit into that? Possibly, as long as someone thinks he'd actually press. There are other options, but cost will also come into it. Bellingham probably couldn't leave this summer but c£100m, Rice £100m, Ward-Prowse £60m, FdJ £60m. We also need a left back. Pogba on a free makes a lot of sense in spend terms, even if the salary would be higher.
I'm not bothered he played for them, as they won't get a penny out of it and he clearly doesn't care that much for them. Most of their fans are saying they'll be glad to see the back of him, so him playing well for us would just add to the fun but it's not the reason for signing him. If Pep thinks he'd fit into the team, that's good enough for me. If he doesn't, I'm good with that too.
