Pep’s Spurs (H) Post-Match Interview

IT had been coming. Week by week, as Liverpool toiled to recapture even a hint of the form that brought a title so tantalisingly close, and as each dropped point saw pre-season expectation give way to a reality of spiralling bleakness, you could sense the frustration build.

It found an outlet in the 70th minute of the Chelsea game. As the electronic board revealed the numbers of Coutinho and Can, the two brightest performers in another disappointing team display, signalling a premature end to their afternoon’s work, the boos began. Their intensity peaked as the players made their way to the touchline.

Some felt the need to accompany the booing with a thoughtfully constructed critique of the substitutions, which they were happy to share with Brendan Rodgers via an intricate series of hand gestures and spittle-soaked expletives. Others just looked fed up.

AND

March, 1982. Liverpool are at the start of a run of 11 consecutive wins, which will ultimately ensure another title is delivered, one which Bob Paisley would later describe as the most satisfying in all his years at the club. Struggling Sunderland arrive at Anfield as lambs to the inevitable slaughter.

Midway through the second half and a slender one goal lead cannot disguise a lifeless Liverpool performance. Three days earlier, we had suffered the trauma of an unjust European Cup exit away in Sofia. The players are clearly yet to fully recover. Paisley’s response is to remove Craig Johnston, whose sparky, energetic display casts the laboured efforts of his teammates into sharp contrast.

It is not a popular decision. Boos cascade down from the back of the Kop. In the Main Stand, people are on their feet, turning to the Directors’ Box where Paisley sits impassively, and venting their considerable ire. It’s the most animated some of them have been for years.

Worth noting in 1982, LFC were European Cup winners at the time and had won the competition in 1977 and 1978. Incredible really. Surely only spoilt fans would boo in that scenario.

LFC supporters just cannot help lying. It seems to be so natural to them.

High risk but genius from Pep to prove to the players who played slowly and conceded twice by allowing them to go out in the second half and prove to themselves that they’ve got that second half performance in them without relying on the subs.

Just goes to show how much of football is in the head, even at the highest level
That’s a very good point

then why not bring in somebody in the winter market ? Pep Ego about I will find the answer, sometimes is a leveller for others, playing a centre back at left back/wing back is not the answers
At present time i don't think their are many outstanding leftbacks to go for.
I think Gomez will be just like the Angelino situation & be moved on.
Pg doesn't trust him ,he is a liability with his defending.
Maybe the kid coming through Wilson-Esbrand could be the long term answer ? For the short term i think we should of kept Zinchenco instead of strengthening Arsenal squad ,same with Jesus we should of forced him abroad or told him to stay .

100% spot on

I have rewatched the game and pep was saying nobody was helping Lewis after the fouls ? sorry pep your wrong, go and watch the city players moaning to the ref about the amount of fouls on Lewis,

the team is working so hard on covering the problem on the left side of the defence and shape, AKE is not a left back and the first goal spurs scored was not just down to Ederson, AKE had the chance to run the ball out or play it up field but instead turned back and played it to the keeper, the problem was spurs players was still in the press and 3 or 4 spurs players closed the gaps on the out ball,

maybe it's the hunger or desire and going again from the players, but believe me the setup is so wrong in defence,
the rest have worked out we have nothing on the left side and bomb down the left at will, it's inviting trouble before we even kick off,
Totally agree , and Southampton did and caused us all sorts of problems

We are probably now a 50% local club and 50% tourist attraction and the manager needs to realize that.

Last night the amount of Asian fans around me and around the group was noticeable all with half and half scarfs. That wasnt to see City that was the Son factor.

They could be fans of both City and Son. Manchester is a multicultural city. Just to add, I do find 'fans of players' to be a bit weird :)

He was content enough to create disharmony with his International colleagues,so who is to say he isn't a happy bunny here too?

Gundo was heavilly hinting at something/someone.

Or it could be the brexit juan mata, Grealish. Or Foden. Or nobody. What's with the quick turning on our players, that's pretty much the opposite of what Pep was calling for.

Has anyone come up with a melody for 'we know how good you are, show us again' yet?

Or a banner.
