Pep Guardiola - 2023/24

Overthinking it far too much right now and the 3-2-4-1 formation simply doesn’t work with this team.

He’s been an innovator for so long and loves to pull off setups others wouldn’t dare but right now he needs someone strong beside him to give him a slap and snap him out of this obsession with making fetch happen.

Set up was fine, as reflected in the first half performance. Better side, should have been further ahead.
Ake’s mistake shook us, then the players collectively lost their heads. Perhaps could have reacted more quickly, but not sure what he could have done tactics-wise. Subs were fine - Alvarez was hopeless, De Bruyne was poor and completely gassed.

If I am honest, I put these dropped points on Pep. He stuck with Alvarez for far longer than he should have, after it was a very clear he was a major issue for us (and that is coming from someone that defended his selection). And probably left a misfiring Kev on too long, as well.

He obviously can’t be faulted for Liverpool’s equaliser but I do think we may have been able to nick a winner if Pep had brought on Kovacic and Doku earlier.

Not is worst showing on the touchline for us but not his best, either. I think we got the slightly stubborn Pep today.

The rag scum in their pomp could handle the Anfield pressure. They had some nasty tough bastards . We don't .

But Liverpool were a bit shit back then.

I think we weren't patient enough today, especially after taking the lead. Their press was hard to beat, but we could have done better. Stones's hybrid CB/CM role was a bit useless in this game. He was mostly lost in midfield. We need actual midfielders there.

The fact Pep said we were better when Kova was on sums up his selection mistake today, Kova should have started in place of Alvarez today.
I am not sure Pep can be faulted for his selection as much as his reluctance to change it once it was obvious it wasn’t working.

Alvarez in the high press and build up role could have worked well, but it was pretty clear it wasn’t by halftime. It was actually having the opposite effect after the restart (we were a poorer side with him in it at that point), and Pep’s stubbornness to acknowledge and correct it was his real mistake.

Kovacic should have come on for Alvarez on 50 minutes. In retrospect, I am sure Pep knows that keeping him on was doing no one any favours, especially not the Argentine.
