He really needs to go back to the 2-3 build up shape with 3 midfielders instead of the 3-2.
We are too passive in the 3-2, and the extra midfielder is better support for Kova and Bernie.
He has hit gold with the 235 shape, he even had to use it against Brugge when he fucked up usinf the 325 against them.
Stop switching the system on these players. Use the one that has some sort of proof it works and stick to it.
We set up in a 4-4-2, with the wingers tucking into wide midfield roles, and Marmoush or KDB as second striker.
In possession, we turn into a 3-3-4, and if we can pin a team back inside their 35, then we become a 2-5-3.
The problem is that if we lose possession, that 5 quickly becomes MAYBE a 1 or 2 in support for the 2 CBs holding down the fort.
Throw in the recent performance of our keepers and…5-1!
We need a 4-4-2 that has some steel in the middle of the park. Then, in possession, we can shuttle the FBs down the line. But, if our midfield can’t get out to the wings to cover an advanced FB, or shutdown any counter through the middle, then we are going to get run over.
The irony?
We will get run over by coaches that have built teams to counter the “Pep possession game” that ALMOST EVERYONE is playing now.
In fact, the teams that have taken Prp’s game and sped it up, rather than simply shuttling it left and right FOREVER, are the ones that are not only doing well, but giving us the most trouble!
Pep needs a little self-reflection, because, like Fat Sam, what’s worked for your entire career, doesn’t always work TOMORROW!
Lastly, while I certainly don’t envy their results, watching Ange-Ball is a lot more entertaining atm. If he had the players, he’d be challenging Liverpool with his tactics!
