I was right behind the goal when he dummied Pat Jennings and dinked it over him in another City romp over Tottenham 5-0. One of the all time great Maine Road goals from that era in my opinion.

Some cracking goals in that game.

Is it correct that Barnes' dink over Jennings was one of the first examples of that particular skill?
That was my first ever city match. Had a profound effect on me as a seven year old lad. I was hooked. :-)

What a team that was,21 games without defeat IIRC. Home and away.Oh the memories.

I remember that game well. It was indeed some team; should have won a league title.

There were 4 Manchester lads in that team and I think 7 or 8 in all, in the squad that season.

Everyone of those goalscorers was a genuine hero of mine when I was a kid. But have to agree with tidyman, Barnes was very good on his day (capable of moments of magic) but his good games became less and less frequent in a surprisingly short space of time.

Barnes and Owen were both crap in 78/79 - especially Barnes.
Maybe had something to do with the awful winter.
I think we really needed to replace Dennis Tueart with someone similar rather than completely rebuild at the time.
Allison wanted to play without wingers - hence Barnes was sold; makes sense in that context but obviously whatever Mal was trying to do didn't quite work out, albeit he only had a season and a little bit to try it.
Who knows - maybe if we hadn't appointed Bond the players Allison had bought would have gelled and we would not have gone bust and got relegated from all the extra spending Bond did which left us completely skint and with no squad in the year we went down.

Gary Buckley ...... Just how bad was Big Mals judgement at this stage of his career (I know about the sixties) , this is turning into a list of worst players to wear blue. (Barney Daniels however was not a Big Mal signing) lol

This is interesting viewing for all Blues, both young and old. I'd say possibley more interesting for the younger ones amongst us. I remember it well. It's on camara, how Steve Daley tells Big Mal, "I don't agree with ya, I think you're wrong". Fookin tosser. I'd have sacked him on the spot, useless waste o' money.
