As many as pep thinks he can as he is the expert and knows if he is carrying an inj etc, we know nothing
Pep is the expert yes, doesn't mean he can't be wrong and maybe just maybe he doesn't actually care. Pep is unfortunately not gonna be here for 10 years (I assume). He probably will be here for another 3 years and therefor won't prefer to develop our Academy kids. In an "easy" home game like Huddersfield last week or Newcastle next week I'd say its at least 90-95% chance we'd win playing our strongest available side. Playing Foden instead of a Gundogan wouldn't mean we'd be down on 60% chance of winning the game. More like 85-95%.
He's very young but a fact is that you can count his appearances that actually is good for his development on one hand. Community Shield, Leicester in the CC, Southampton (10mins), CL against Basel, CL against Shakhtar. Coming on to play 10-15mins when we lead 3-0 is great fun of course but he doesn't learn much really as the opponents have given up and just wants the game to end.
Foden is right now one of the biggest talents in the world. I'm too young to remember how big hype our players had when they were 18 (I know Aguero and Kompany were seen as huge talents) but the fact is that almost
all of our outfield players played a lot of senior football the season they turned 18/after they turned 18 (like Foden going into this season).
Bernardo, Gundogan, Otamendi and Delph are the only players that barely played senior league football that season. All of them but Otamendi were a certain starter for their teams the season after that. Apart from those guys Zinchenko, Walker and Sane didnt play much (Sane did only 7 starts and 6 sub appearances in the league). The rest of our squad played a lot of league games that season.
It's a long season and a lot can obviously happen but I doubt that Foden will get more than 200-250mins in the league this season and then it actually becomes a problem (unless he starts 10 cup games). At his age they need competitive senior football to take the next step. Of course he'll receive a brilliant football education training with world class players everyday and having Pep as his coach. But to develop he needs to get minutes when the opposing team are still fighting for the game.
I probably (cant promise you though) will stop moaning about Fodens lack of opportunities for some months to see how much game time he actually gets but history shows that a big majority of our squad today played a lot of league games at his age right now and if he doesn't get his chances he needs to get a loan.
