PL charge City for alleged breaches of financial rules

Martin Samuel article in the Sunday Times today, it's pretty obvious what he thinks of Richard Masters and his co-conspirators at the PL:


What we are being asked to concede is that... Manchester City’s move from punchline to headline bringing with it some of the greatest football and footballers we have seen, plus the greatest manager, was without merit. The very thing that made the Premier League the best is being redrawn as its biggest failing.

They’ve got a high bar to jump to as well, statuette of limitations on how far they can go back. If it’s serious fraud they can go as far back as they want, however has any criminal activity gone on here to allow the Premier League to do that. This probably falls down on that straight away.

.... but if it is NOT fraud but only breaches of the current rules or any rules that were not in place the time the alleged offences occurred, can they really retrospectively change the rules that were in place and prosecute? A tough ask I'd guess.

I've always said it.... Martin Samuel is without doubt the finest and most impartial sports journalist in the UK in modern times.

He also is part owner of a club that has had a massive owner investment, so he would be seen to be a massive hypocrite I guess he actually understands more than the average football pundit due to his Salford City involvement and his property empire

The KC's on the commision will only consider the rules at the time of the offence

Martin Samuel has given us a vision of what lies ahead for the PL. In time Richard Masters will be studied in Business schools along with Gerald Ratner, ie how the wrong person at the wrong time can single handedly destroy a multi billion pound business.

Can't stress this next point enough.

BEFORE the IC hearing - Masters approved the list of clubs given clearance to seek compensation from Everton.

BEFORE the IC hearing - Masters had instructed the IC hearing on the points deduction sanction to be used on Everton.

So he is now legally obliged to follow that process. So BEFORE our IC, what clubs have been given clearance to seek compensation from City, and what sanction has Masters asked for if we are found guilty of ANY number of the charges from 1 all the way to 115.

if the list of clubs is so numerous and the point deduction so excessive that the IC effectively represents an existential risk the club should seek an injunction at the High Court to stop what is already a polluted and prejudicial process. This should be resolved in a court of English Law where everyone including RIchard Masters and Daniel Levy etc will be forced to give evidence under oath.

I can not believe our Legal advice is to pursue with this kangaroo court when the owners face huge losses.

Very informative and balanced article. Martin writes what most of us think and feel about the situation. A lone voice drowned out by the ferocious click bait pack. At least we know it’s not always bias blue thinking on our part.

Wonder how many points Master the red has recommended the independent tribunal to hit City with? Greed and jealousy by the red clubs has destroyed the league. All because they fear competition. This is what happens when you hand over so much power to those clubs.
