Been reading the talk on the Crystal Palace pre-match thread about awkward train times and on comes Simon & Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound", written on a dark and miserable Widnes station platform. Which makes me think, what are the loneliest, most God-forsaken and neglected places folk have got stuck trying to get home after a City match? Or to get to one? In which freezing waiting rooms or litter-strewn bus shelters have you curled up for the night with only a City scarf for comfort?
(My own saddest, dampest memory is being stuck by the side of the A1 in the pissing rain trying to hitch a ride to Newcastle in May, 1968. As the hours went by and cars, lorries & removal vans ignored my cardboard sign and hopeful thumb it got to 2 p.m., so with 150 miles still to go i gave up and went back to my student digs.)

A similar story. Went to QPR in 1974 with my buddy Alan. Only had enough money for a one way bus ticket so had to hitch back to Oldham. It took two days. Overnight in a barn. It was freezing. Thank God for the wagon driver who picked us up South of Birmingham and dropped us in Manchester. Got on the 98 bus and gave a false name and address to the conductor and we got home. The things you do for love!

Ashton but thankfully there isn't usually too long of a wait in between getting off the tram and getting a taxi home...

Not sure it counts but I once got stuck in Dam before the derby at Old Trafford the other year. Plane on the Friday got cancelled due to snow so managed to jump on the last overnight bus to London which was an experience. Then train up from there. All the while getting told the game was probably getting called off.

Ended up a good decision, we won and those I was with in Dam had to stay an extra 5 days and fly back to Southampton!

On the day City wore yellow shirts at Arsenal and lost 4 nil I got stranded.

As a teenager we got into Hull port at about 8am after a college trip in Holland. I got someone to take my case home and set off for Highbury on a 1 way ticket to make the game in time. Managed it all perfectly, only to realise I didn’t have enough money for the return ticket to Manchester.

I was more interested in ensuring I got to the game as opposed to working it all out.

Had to get Euston station to ring my Dad to buy a ticket over the phone.

78, maybe 79, Spurs away over the Christmas/NYE period. I was staying at my sisters in Morecambe, brother in law dropped me at Forton Services about midnight. Got to Knutsford about 6am, it was snowing, tried continuing south but gave up about 12, crossed over the footbridge and tried for a lift north, fucking 7pm when I eventually got picked up, 13 fucking hours, should have just walked home to Stockport. Anyway, after 2 more lifts my brother in law picked me up in Leyland about 1am. No idea if we won or not.
