But football IS only about goals scored.
And frankly for a large part of this season Haaland has deserved better service than the other "superb" players have given him.

Don't want to be a dick but the idea of Haaland not getting POTY upsets me. And I suspect would be embarrassing for any other player who picked up the award instead.

Edit: 82% of the media agree with me (FWA POTY). Not sure if that makes or breaks my argument :)
Player of the year is about the most important player. If Haaland gets injured, I am certain Alvarez would keep us up there (we are scoring pretty much the same amount of goals as last year, it's not like those 50 goals from Haaland are extra to what we used to scored). Now don't misunderstand me, I think Haaland is the greatest goalscorer and threat football has had in a while, but City is a TEAM and we were at the same level for the last 5-6 years. Alvarez would allows us to play false 9 just like last year, and he is an even greater threat than Gabby or Bernardo or even Foden who used to be our false 9 the last 2 years. If Rodri gets injured, that is season over for us.

Same for Barca at their peak, Messi can get injured and they would still be winning most titles. If both Xavi and Iniesta are injured, they cannot play the way they want to and it's an even bigger deal. Is Messi better than Xavi or Iniesta? Of course, but that doesn't mean he is more important than either.

I guess you think Gerd Muller was the best player of the 70s, when he was not close to being that (despite breaking pretty much every scoring record back then). Reducing football to IS only about goals scored is just reductionist at best, and lacking of understanding of what football is at worst.

Shame Rodri is not up there (for me clearly the PotS), but it is what it is. Offensive players will always tend to get the accolades, and the important thing is I don't think Rodri cares at all.

Either way the top 3 has been at an incredible level and all of them deserve it. I think we've had 7 players at an immense level: Haaland, Grealish, KDB, Ake, Stones, Rodri and Dias (this one is under the radar, but his comeback literally coincided with us being rock solid defensively again).

Soo the rest of the players don't deserve it because they couldn't provide a better service to haaland?!

OK. Are you a haaland fan?

No it’s not at all. The player of the year is the player of the year otherwise Ederson would have been player of the year for the last 5 years according to that bizarre logic.

Haaland has broken club, league and national records in his first season in the two toughest competitions in the world at the age of 22 and some are choosing others because they “keep us ticking”.

GK is the most different position. They very rarely get injured, and they don't need rotation.

Again, if I had to rate every single match by Rodri and Haaland, I think the average for Rodri would be higher. I still think Haaland can get better. Breaking records, especially individual ones in a team sport doesn't always tell you everything. Again, Gerd Muller being a perfect example of that. I am not attacking Haaland, like I said he is the best goalscorer I've seen, and he is getting better on other aspects of his game.

Kev.

Best player in the world right now, and probably one of the top twenty five players of all time.
