why did we not simply keep nigel de jong...

Well for starters he didn't want to stay, right? Didn't he reject our contract offer?
And secondly he wasn't good enough to be a starter, and probably too good to be a bench warmer.

Fernando though, is not good enough period.

Watching Monaco earlier tonight, Kondogbia looks very impressive.

Good point, but the reason we sold Nigel De Jong is because he wasn't good enough on the ball, and we've spent the best part of 60million on players who are actually worse on the ball than him! Bonkers.

Compare and contrast an excellent DM (Busquets) with a poor one (Fernando). Come back and tell me how/why Fernando is in any way a good buy

Fernando, Garcia, etc highlight the difficulty in finding a CDM for our system. It would be a shame to tweak our system to build around the one position to make it effective.

It is better to risk it and buy a world class CDM this summer instead of continuing to pour money on this position.

This position was more glaring than the central defence in my opinion.

We didn't need to spend 30m-40m on Mangala whom for me will never justify that price, if you scout the market there were plenty of defenders available at the 10m-15m who were as good if not better than him.

In my opinion Zouma looks the more promising player and he cost Chelsea around 12m.

People go on about FFP but the fact is we have not spent wisely over the past two seasons and overpaid for average players.

Atletico, Dortmund and even Juventus don't spend big money on players, they scout the market incredibly well and it's something we should have done and should be doing.

We should get a decent scouting system in place definitely. So far it has not been very effective. However until then the club should make it a priority to gather world class players so that they have a minimal risk of failing, even if they cost a lot of money. Koke and Pogba, etc.

I don't think we need to play a CDM most weeks but Alex Song is a free agent in the summer and he can make forward passes...

Pogba, Toure, Dinho and Song would give us a much better selection of CMs

Totally agree with you Sam.

One area of the club that needs a major overhaul is our scouting of players. It seems on the available evidence that in the last few windows our scouts have not produced the goods.

I like Mangala as a player but he was definitely overpriced. I always believe that you need to buy experienced central defenders, rather than take a punt on a player like Mangala and thrust him straight into the heat of central defence. It generally takes years to develop the skills to play effectively as a central defender. A player like Mangala may eventually develop those skills, but I agree that it's unlikely he will ever justify the price tag as the most expensive defender in the leagues history. I think we also got ripped off in paying 12 mill for Fernando. There is no way that he is an improvement on Garcia.

Football is big business and a very competitive marketplace. A review of our scouting system would be very high on our to do list, if I was Txiki and Soriano.

Garcia was very much underrated and just became a boo boy for the baying fans to blame. Happens so many times fans all jump on the same band wagon and if they have a go at the likes of Garcia and Kolarov to make themselves look knowledgeable to an already disillusioned set of fans.

Let me know 1 game that Garcia let us down in and I can name you twice as many that Milner has. But slagging Milner off isn't the doen thing is it.

Its opinion of course......but neither the above two players are/were good enough to play for us.Ive seen plenty of both to not be convinced otherwise.

No player is allowed a free pass when it comes to criticism, and I will always call it as I see it regardless........it just happens those two justify it on a very regular basis.

I remain defiant that Fernando isn't anywhere near the disaster some would insist.
Your joking
Fernando makes Jamie Pollock look world class .
Believe me he actually isn't joking, this lad couldn't judge between Angelina Jolie's mouth and a piranhas which would be more pleasurable to stick his meat in.
Maybe he's one of our scouts
