Player thread: James Milner (2014/15)

If he wants to leave for first team football, fine, but he could have at least signed a new contract to let us get a (small) fee

James Milner will quit Manchester City this summer and sign for Liverpool, write Steve Bates and Tom Hopkinson in the Sunday People.

And that could see champions City accelerate a £35million move for another England star – Everton’s Ross Barkley.

England midfielder Milner has made up his mind to call time on his career at the Etihad Stadium for a fresh challenge.

And it’s almost certain he will make the £125,000-a-week switch to Anfield to help plug the gap left by Steven Gerrard’s end-of-season exit to LA Galaxy.

Despite the offer of a new contract several weeks ago – as well as efforts by Blues' manager Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Txiki Begiristain to persuade him to stay – sources close to the star were last night saying he will leave at the end of the campaign.

It will be a blow to City fans who, along with Pablo Zabaleta, rate the popular star as one of their most honest performers.

But it is a bigger set-back to City’s quota of English players

He's good, but he ain't that fuckng good!!

I'd like Milner to say, he's had good games in important matches. However, can you see any of Europe's top teams worrying about a player like him leaving or are they trying to sign him?

A very good player but very much replaceable if he(unfortunately) wants to leave

I stopped reading when I saw the words 'Steve Bates'

Disappointed to lose him but it's a sign of the times when our players are going to Liverpool because they don't get enough game time for city

Milner is clearly leaving. And candle land appears the preferred destination.

What a tit.

Sorry mate, your out of order. Jimmy has been nothing if not professional in his time with us. If we couldn't come up with a mutual solution to maintain him, then he has every right to walk away and sign for whoever he wants.

Might not have been the most gifted player, but always gave his all for the club.

I wish him well wherever he plays next.
