Player thread: Vincent Kompany (2014/15)

i think he's fallen out with Pellegrini, as a few of the players have over Pellegrini's stubbornness to change things. Granted he's not playing well, but apart from a couple of players in the team, who isnt?

Regardless of who the player is, if he's playing thia badly, he should be dropped, like Pellegrini did with Hart last year. Trouble is, there's no one to replace him that's any better currently.

He needs to taste the bench, a kick up the ass to show him (and everyone) nobody is untouchable. Every player needs competition, especially at his age no player can take it for granted, it is a honour to play for City.

We should give him until the rest of this season and the start of next to see if he can get out of his current rut. If his form doesn't improve then there will be a tough decision in regards to his future as captain and being a regular starter.

Problem is we're totally exposed against the big teams .... Two in central midfield with one being Yaya means Fernandinho is trying to do the running for two players and Kompany is getting drawn out ... A lot of this is down to Pellegrini tactics in big games IMO and Yaya can be pretty f*cking useless at times if we are not dominating the game and possession.

Don't know if that's true but it did happen to Demichelis last season !
Lescott got untold amounts of shit on here in the 12/13 season when he played.
In most of his games he mopped up Kompany's mess, often doing the defending for two.

Whilst Kompany has obviously earned respect from our fan base, remember he is not immune from criticism and my word, his form has been on the slide well over a year. Calling him a clown is ridiculous, but inferring he is immune from criticism and ill-form is ridiculous also.

I've thought this for about a year now but have never really been arsed enough to comment on here (mostly because any criticism of Kompany would've been treated as blasphemy in the past). He WAS great in the past (under Mancini), but...

I genuinely don't think I've seen a more overrated player at the club in my life (22 years). Now this doesn't mean he isn't still a very good player, it means he isn't anywhere near the great CB's of the game that people seem to compare him to.

Always running out of position, always picking up stupid bookings for daft challenges, always lapsing in concentration, doesn't read the game particularly well and far too error prone (even more so recently). All key things that a top CB SHOULDN'T be. As a CB, if you consistently make that many mistakes then you're not reliable which simply means you aren't that good.

His only 2 genuinely world class seasons were under Mancini for my money. Looked shaky as fuck since, Demichelis has been better than him for the best part of a year. It's not just our own fans, seems like some pundits see him as some sort of Maldini level player. Baffles me. I think a lot of people rate him based on athleticism and the tackles he will sometimes win where he breaks out from the back 4.

As I said, I've thought this about Kompany for a while, nothing knee-jerk about it.

He's not drawn out though, he just thinks he can win every ball and ends up leaving his position, completely pulling our shape apart (see Barca's 2nd goal last week). High-risk strategy that rarely pays off.

Why is it that our other CB doesn't get drawn out every 2 minutes?

Not many of our current squad are good enough for Europe and have come up short in 11 or 27 premiership games.

Two poor exits in domestic cups.

Kompany is included in that list.

Admittedly we have a reasonable manager but not one who can take us where we need to go.

Not nearly good enough in the crunch games when we should be doing much better.

Txiki is on his last chance saloon as well.

We should liimp into Europe this season but that won't save MP.

No wins against Arsenal ( 1-6 ) , Chelsea ( 2-6 ) , unable to beat an ordinary Liverpool outfit at Anfield again plus some very ordinary displays at home against poor sides in Europe and in the Premier League.

The summer will determine whether we move forward with Txiki or start with a clean slate.

I wonder if there's a case for rethinking our defensive approach entirely right now? Vinnie has been a brilliant CD for us, but he's also a pretty good defensive mid, too. Given the personnel at our disposal, this would allow us to go:

Hart
Zab Demi Mangala Clichy
Vinnie
Fernandinho Yaya
Nasri Silva
Aguero

It's a pretty flexible approach where 4141 can easily be tweaked to 4231 etc., as circumstances dictate. ... but it gives the backline the cover that's missing right now ... while playing to a lot of Vinnie's strengths.

won't happen with MP..
