I don't disagree with that first point, we'd be far better off with fullbacks who can play, but for me you need a blend; sure Marcelo might help us going forward but he wouldn't drastically improve us as we'd still be just as crap at the back, and great at attacking or not he's not going to add a goal a game himself. Zab was close to perfect in the sense he could do both roles to a high standard & that's the sort of player we need on each side - I'd take someone who is 7/10 going forward & 7/10 defending rather than someone who is 5/10 defending & 9/10 going forward personally. We should have enough attack power in our front 4 that having a fullback whose good at attacking rather than fantastic at attacking should be more than enough.
Not necessarily good at attacking, but good at footballing. That's what Marcelo is. Attacking really is a team effort, and the more technically sound players you have, the smoother and faster your offense runs. Our defense is partly shit because we don't have good footballers playing in it.

There is a psychological part to it too. When you dominate possession with incisive pressure, the mentality of your opposition becomes that of a team simply trying to survive an onslaught.

Teams in that mind set often can't attack themselves.

This is how I want us to look and play.

i think LB will be an area that will be looked at strongly next summer, with a purchase likely. who would be a better deputy? kolarov or clichy? (presuming the new LB is better than both)

Don't talk absolute and utter shit. I think you need to come back down to earth if you really think we have any chance of winning the CL. You are wumming.

Of course we have a chance. Not a very good one, a slight chance, but still a chance. Who would have put Wigan down to win the FACup when they did. Even when they got to the final no one gave them ANY chance! Football is no more than a game of chance and which card yer turn over . . . . . . . . . !

Ok i'll concede we do have a chance purely by virtue of still being in it but come on, really.

All four full backs are over 30 and the two waiting in the wings are too young/inexperienced(are they even good enough?)...next Summer we need to buy both a left and a right back who are of Zaba's level of a few years ago who are about 25 years old and we can then sell on one of our left backs and one of our right backs. I would say this is the area in the team that needs improvement to a higher standard to make us a seriously decent side more than any other. Not centre half, not centre mid, full backs! Not that there's anything particularly wrong with any of the ones we have (even the young lads), but with their ages and lack of attacking quality consistently (good cross for Sterling's goal v Watford and great cross for Kun's goal at Watford aside, Sagna - even though he's done well as a stand-in for Zaba, very well in fact - he contributes surprisingly little to our attacking play on a regular basis...Kolarov can put in three world class crosses a game but also puts in 15 poor deliveries...Clichy and Zaba have been injured).

Full backs who are better than both Clichy and Kolarov? It's like finding a striker better than Aguero! All depends on the day! Clichy and Kollers have had some fantastic matches. Sergio has had some very quiet ones. If you do find an LB who can defend, attack and put in a regular decent cross you will have found the footballing equivalent of the Holy Grail - and you will have to pay!! Megabucks!! Personally, I think the beast doesn't exist! Whichever full back you want there will be a weakness! Oh, and I nearly forgot about pace. We want someone who can run like the wind! £50m for a full back, anyone?

Ricardo Rodriguez? Could Guardiola tempt Alaba to come with him from Bayern?

I've seen stranger things in football than MCFC winning the CL. We need just four ties where we might have to play well in one of 'em, and it needn't be the final. There are some very strong teams still left in who, say, eight times out of ten, will beat us. But we might just catch 'em in one of the other two games. None of those teams left in are invincible. We can beat them. I'm not saying we will, but we can! We need to play just a little better than we did on Saturday!!! It is not beyond a reasonable notion.

Stranger things have happened and if we manage to get someone like Zenit in the Quarters you never know where we can go from there if Kompany gets fit and Kun stays fit.

you make a good point, people want so much from kolarov its unreal, constant high level crosses and constant high level defending but i feel kola has depleted in most areas of his game sadly.

i think the team might benefit from a more solid full back on the left, more like Sagna, at the slight expense of attacking. A fluid front 5 could compensate, but then again if the manager who is in charge next season wants attacking full backs then thats what they want.

we were so so so lucky to have zaba on his game for a number of seasons, he really did everything to a decent level

This is where the criticism of Kollers and Clichy comes from - Zaba had defence and attack in the perfect balance and folk want the same on the other flank.

I'll personally double any odds you can find and offer you a bet if you wished to place one.

I agree but Zabba hasn't produced that form for between 12 and 18 months (largely due to injury and overplaying with internationals etc). Both Sagna and Kolarov have both had a good first half of the season.

I've been pretty happy with the form of Kollers and Baccers this season, particularly, Sagna who is either a perfect athletic specimen or a match or two away from the Knackers'Yard.

Yes the Stoke came comes to mind when Sagna was running on empty and Silva was leaving him to mark two players. Hopefully Zabba can share the workload in the second half of the season

I am hoping Clichy will share the left back work over the rest of the season with us often aying twice per week!
