Should we be following the Arsenal route and start resting players in the Champions League?

We have to be pragmatic. Away in Europe, to go with Yaya in the 2 is criminal. We got away with it tonight. Against better opposition we'll get turned over!! Fernando may not be the best DM in the world but he is the best we have for that position. He got exposed last year in a 2 with Yaya and the injury didn't help. Hopefully partnered with Dinho and either Yaya or Silva in front we'll see the best of him.

It's not really against better opposition though. It's that teams know with Yaya in a 2 he won't defend when we don't have the ball. An organized hard working team will press us and counter. It's easy to get to our back line when Fernandinho is pulled out of position and Yaya doesn't track back. It's only when other teams try to park the bus that Yaya is effective for us.

Yep, that's it in a nutshell.
Despite all the inane ramblings spouted by Robbie savage last night he did have one valid point when he said that Fernandinho and Yaya needed to stay behind the ball and let the 4 up top do the attacking. (Well one should have, but that would have stifled Fernandinho's game). When Fernando came on he was more disciplined at the back and this allowed Otamendi and Demichelis to go for the tackle when kolarov and Sagna had bombed on upfield knowing that backup was there.
2x ferns didn't work last term because they were getting in one another's way. Fernando playing sweeper and Fernandinho box to box and now with more confidence is a better prospect in Europe.

This was the game changer for me last night, putting Fernando on for Yaya. As soon as he came on the tempo was upped we were on the front foot and playing attacking football. If I was in charge I wouldn't play Yaya in that position against this sort of opposition (ones that have a go).

Played well when he came on, read the game very well and made a couple of crucial tackles. Looked good next to Fernandinho.

I think it's crucial those 2 develop a partnership. Before last night they've always looked crap when playing together, even if individually they've been OK. Fernandinho tends to get in Fernando's way as the sole anchor, but last night he played a bit further ahead and was able to play his natural box to box position, rather than the "mopping up after Yaya" role he so often plays here.

He should be playing most European games in front of the back 4 with 2 in front and 3 up top! Ok it means that 1 of the following will miss out but it gives us a better balanc! Silva, sterling, kdb or yaya

That's the no-brainer of the century. Ya Ya's lack of mobility/unwillingness to provide proper defensive cover is a luxury we can't afford in Europe.
