Didn't want to post last night as there was too much emotion and angst in the posts. Watching the game, it was clear early doors that Vinnie had not turned up and this (IMO) had an immediate knock on effect across the whole back line. It is difficult to defend Vinnies performanace yesterday and we shouldn't try to deflect any criticism for his shortcomings due to outside infuences such as travel, injuries, baby leave ect. He was completely out of sorts.

Eli has suffered more than most on here as a result of having players either side of him being off form, and it was no co-incidence he played his best last season when he wasn't partnered with Vinnie. This provides us with a problem which the manager has to address, whether he will/can we will have to wait to see.

2nd half Denayer and Eli looked composed and had much more control (I appreciate they were 4 up and might not have been pushing as hard). For the immediate benefit of the team, IMO, Eli and Denayer should start against the baggies, and if that goes well, against the Chavs.

That then introduces the problem of how (if that is what Pellers wants to do), does he integrate Vinnie back into the side without the fear of dropping silly points, but we certainly cannot continue indefinitely like this.

How many games hasKompany played in pre-season? One or two? Looked very rusty.

I think we should cut him some slack given that he has a new born child and has barely played.

Kompany and Mangala have played very few games together and that doesn't help, but neither has Denayer and he did very well.

If City put Fernando in front of the defence and drop Kompany for 1 or 2 games we have an easy solution. I am not too worried. This is what pre-season games are for. Annoys me though how slack our preparation is. I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that City's pre-season is entirely about money and image and not about football.

Well, for one thing,Vinnie acknowledged the fact that he was off his game last year and wanted to come back stronger this season, so came back to training camp few weeks early to get his fitness in order. kudos to him for the efforts; but from what i see, we can not afford to make the mistake of relying on him anymore; we need to go out and get ourselves a world class Center Back that way even if Vinnie find his form we are still solid in the back.
Love the guy to death, i'm seriously baffled by what is happening to our Vinnie. As a good defender even if you loose the physical aspect your the game your mental aptitude should only get better as you age(John Terry, martin Demichelis).

Or could it be that he just had a very bad day????

I don't think giving Kompany and Mangala more time together is the answer - I think it's just a poor partnership top to bottom. They're practically the same player. They need to be paired with a young fast Martin Demichellis (No idea if Denayer is that person).

They are each young and fast.

I'm not worried about Kompany because he'll work hard on his game and get it right.

And the cover will come in midfield.

Denayer looks ready for the 1st team - that's a massive plus

Questions I think we are all wondering about. I think he'll be fine in time. I thought he was coasting last season, but I am sure he'll be the old Vinny soon enough.

The thing with Kompany right now is his head has gone. His positioning and decision making are awful.

It's not his fitness that is the problem it's a mental thing. Until he can get his head straight he is going to continue to perform poorly and for City that is a major problem. He is the captain and leader of the team but right now doesn't merit a starting berth.

This is a big test for Pellegrini and he can't afford to get it wrong as sticking with Vinnie could see us dropping a shit load of points.

Great comment.

Kompany's problem is 90% in the head. He needs to take a chill pill. he gets far too wound up even before a ball is kicked, have a good look at MDC...coolness personified..Kompany is not the player he thinks he is......take the captaincy off him, and get back to the basics Vinny, stop thinking your superman!

At what point do we need to give serious thought to changing the club captaincy? Kompany doesn't deserve to be in the team, yet he is simply because he's wearing an armband. That's not right in my opinion. I'd either have Aguero as a lead-by-example kind of captain, or give it Joe Hart. Both are players that deserve to be in the team and will be for a long time. Zab would have been the obvious choice, but we rotate the full backs too much for a full back to be our captain. Unfortunately though, if it changed, they'd give it to Yaya.
