Talking of bows, back in the olden days, every parish in england had to produce a certain amount of bow stays for the kings armies.
The best wood for bow making was yew.
Now the problem with yew is, it's poisonous to livestock, so it cant be grown where sheep or cows graze.
So what did they do I hear you ask.
Well, they grew the trees in churchyards, where no animals were grazed.
That's why there are numerous old yew trees in churchyards today, and are rarely seen elsewhere.
Next time you pass an old church, have a look. Chances are it will have one or more old yew trees.
