Not really, lets forget the constant digs in the other fanbases and media. Winning a Cl with all the domestic success, would make it hard to dispute that this is one of the best ever English sides. People will always hold not winning the Cl against us when talking about the best sides.

Exactly. This is fundamentally why winning this trophy is vital.

I stand to be corrected on this — @Gary James ?— but it seems to me that in 67-68 we were never top before we actually went top in the last few days. In fact, we were fourth or something like that until about the last two matches.

Are you saying because Porto and PSV have won the CL in the past it's a shit trophy? Those are huge clubs in there own countries and in Europe.

Leicester won the league a few years ago, is the PL a shit trophy now?

I’m saying that only winning the CL this season does little to enhance our reputation.

Winning the league this season is so much more important as 4 years out of 5 gives us unarguable era defining dominance over the dippers. If they win it that’s only 3-2 to us and the debate is still open

Strange you mentioned those six clubs rather than the likes of Bayern, Barcelona, Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus, et al.

If we win the CL this season, it will have been against them. We probably won’t get another chance of a final like this. It’ll be the ultimate point in any discussion of who’s better. If we have 4-1 leagues, and they can say “but we beat you in the CL final”, how will that feel? The global perception of who’s the better team will go through this final whether people like it or not.

Apparently we were top for a week from 16/3/68 after beating Fulham 5-1, but then lost at Leeds the following week. As far as I can work out, we went top (on goal average) after United lost a fortnight before the end of the season. So three weeks in total.
