Prostate cancer

Every 6 months a blood and urine test for psa, lipid profile including triglycerides, liver profile etc.. Also the important vitamin d also vit b..
White cell and red cell details plus many other checks. Amazing what they can check now from so little blood taken.
Results 2 days later then review of medication with doctor explaining what if anything to change. .

For my post prostate cancer radiotherapy treatment glad to say annual check with usual blood test as my local doctor wants.

I think the problem is that as one gets older a lot can change in 6 months so that's why it is needed.
Never going to happen with the NHS sadly.

Unfortunately we’ve received the news this week after my latest round of blood tests we’ve sadly not beaten this my cancer is still here and growing, I’m now with the Christie and will have to go under a quite intense session of radiotherapy, it’s devastating news especially for my wife and girls who have been through too much already, but we’ll fight and then fight again until we’ve beaten it .I’m in a minority who doesn’t beat this dreadful disease first time round so please don’t give up in thinking it’s all doom and gloom if you are unfortunate to have it , I’ve lost a war but the battle will be won .
Up the blues .

Please lads get checked .

Fucking good luck mate. Fingers crossed for you.

@A57 the snake. I wish you all the best, stay strong and beat it.

Regarding health checks/MOTs I receive an annual check from my GP. Telephone call asking you about smoking, alcohol etc and also making an appointment at the surgery for a blood test. One of my friends was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer so I asked if I could be checked and also for my cholesterol levels. They were happy to do this at the same appointment as for my annual blood test. The prostate check was also bloods only. Get it checked lads, they're happy to do it but you just need to make the effort and ask.

Heard today my dad has an enlarged prostate amongst other things, they said they are going to see him sharpish, fuck me I hope it ain’t the big C, he’s not well enough as it is to fight that bastard.
An enlarged prostate is not unusual for men of a certain age and having an enlarged prostate doesn't increase your risk of prostate cancer either. It can be resolved by medication or very minor surgery. I was told same thing and at first I thought the same but was put on medication which helped instantly.

Cheers mate that’s a big of a relief, he’s 78 and not in the best health, hopefully that’s all it is and he can add to the myriad of pills he takes every day.

I'm no medical expert and would hate to give out false hope but my scans revealed an enlarged prostate ( BEP ). My heart sank, but they said it was nothing unusual and could be age or hormonal related. Few days later my gp surgery rang and changed my medication and it helped immediately and have heard nothing else re my health.

Good luck with everything. Have you had the option to remove the prostate or are you going for the radiotherapy by choice? It's a big decision either way and I wish you well and a positive outcome.

My story is I have had bph for ten years now. An enlarged prostate can raise PSA levels which are an indicator it could be cancer. My PSA was 5.7 so I was immediately sent to a consultant. They did another blood test and it had dropped to 4.7 but they still went ahead with a biopsy which thankfully was clear. Since then it has been blood tests and three further scans when it jumped up.

In September my annual blood test showed a reading of 9.9 so they did another after 6 weeks which had jumped to 11.9 so back to the consultant I went. He examined me and said he could feel a nodule ( Previous examinations had been smooth ) and booked me in for a scan and biopsy. I deferred on the biopsy until I heard what the scan said. A nervous 10 day wait occurred when in a phone call I was told the scan didn't show any signs of cancer. I'm going on holiday next week and will have another blood test on my return. He said scans are 99% accurate but he still appears keen to do a biopsy. Fingers crossed the PSA levels have dropped.

As others have said I urge all men over 50 to at least have a PSA test. Insist on one if your doctor is reluctant, it's your life and body on the line not theirs. I get frustrated and annoyed with men I speak to about this who have a blaise attitude to it. Fucking stupidity and false bravado. Get it checked!
