Five years in prison as a minimum might stop this sort of shite. No issues with anyone furthering a cause but do it without causing disruption to others.

Not sure there’s much, if any, evidence to suggest excessively punitive sentences act as a deterrent to determined campaigners with a cause.

Back in the 1980s when animal rights activism was probably at its highest, they had a spell where they were charging people with terrorism related offences and giving them ridiculously long jail sentences.

It might have deterred a few weekend activists. But a lot of these people, irrespective of their upbringing, are utterly convinced they are doing the right thing and dedicate their lives to their particular cause. And the prospect of a few years in prison is unlikely to deter them.

Of course we should be aiming towards a cleaner, renewable energy but the problem with these Just Stop Oil people is that they want everything to stop immediately without us having a viable replacement. Plus what exactly does disrupting a snooker match or throwing soup over a classic and treasured painting actually achieve?
