Public sector pay rise

The giveaway is going on about NHS diversity managers which is a favourite topic of the right wing press even though they consume all of 0.004% of the budget of the NHS leaving 99.996% for everything else.

I'd imagine it actually saves the NHS money if the training means staff are less likely to commit sexual harassment or discriminate against applicants based on protected characteristics.

Less risk of litigation and damages being paid out.

Diversity managers are just one of many topics that are totally insignificant cost wise in any organisation that the right wing media like to latch on to to wind up their “world’s gone mad” consumers. I have little idea what a diversity manager actually does and couldn’t care less. They like to give the impression that the public sector is rife with jobs that they see as a big waste of money and by getting rid of them everything will suddenly have enough funding. All complete bollocks but red meat for the gammon.

It’s not just moving money round the system if they sell their services to the public, companies or charities though is it?

I was going to cite the example of the adult residential education/wedding venue my council runs but they usually make an annual 400k loss.

:(

I'm sure if I'd find some examples in other councils if I cared enough to do some serious research though.

I hadn’t thought of renting out council run venues and I was struggling to think of the private sector part you alluded to. It’s a good point irrespective of your specific example making a loss (although still trying to maximise value so you can’t really fault them).

I bet the companies that own the right wing newspapers have diversity managers themselves. Or certainly someone with a similar role.

But yeah, it's just about portraying anything in the public sector as grossly inefficient compared to the private sector, even though there's no evidence that that's the case. I live abroad and have private health insurance. Are you really telling me that it's a better use of a healthcare professional's time to be filling in insurance forms, or worse, getting a job judging insurance claims rather than treating patients to decide whether the insurance company should pay out? I have fairly regularly got to a private hospital, and the amount of admin involved is ridiculous.

The whole public sector is none profit making, so by definition it’s funded by us, ie the tax payer.
You see your obviously very bitter.
Can you imagine come Election time calling the opposition vermin.
Do you honestly think that’s going to help a particular party get elected.
I am afraid ideology means it just scares the moderates off from voting Labour
I’m not bitter, just incredulous that people can go along with an inept, corrupt regime that is grinding the country into the dust.

Good point, and sure enough Reach PLC, owner of the Express, has a Diversity and Inclusion head. DMGT, owner of the Mail, tells us all about the diversity initiatives and training it does in its annual report. Bunch of fucking hypocrites.

And most other public sector employees who are in superior pension schemes than those in the private sector.
My Mrs who has £80k in her private pension which has dropped £3k from the previous year has just been offered £100pm to convert it in to a taxable pension
Public sector pensions were ripped apart in 2012, they also pay a lot into them, final salary has gone, they are not gold plated five holidays a year and Lamborghini buying pensions. It’s total bollocks, I always laugh when someone in private sector jumps on this, well there are shit loads of vacancies if you fancy becoming a copper and taking shit for 40 years or you can sit behind a desk for similar money I know who has earned that pension in 40 years time.

You quote a copper, they can retire from 55 and draw their pension, normal retirement for them is age 60, in the private sector it’s 66.

Just underline this, a couple of years ago I was speaking to a Sodexo handyman who was fixing some cupboards and, for some reason, I asked how much he charges for the job. No idea why, but I did and the answer shocked the hell out of me!

He told me the absolute maximum he would have charged would have been a couple of hundred quid, but because the NHS fired all its inhouse staff, who were rehired under Sodexo, they get to charge up to a grand for the same job!

Sodexo is one of the biggest drains on the Northwest NHS because they were allowed to input funds as a private entity and have massive profits as a result. They started out as a catering outlet in the NHS, ffs and now in Manchester, at least, all low level staff (porters, cleaners, handymen/ women) are Sodexo staff who are on relatively low pay whilst charging the NHS an arm and a leg for their essential services!

It, truly, is scandalous!
The Sodexo hierarchy and even the middle rankers strut around like 'Billy Big Balls' and treat their 'underlings' like shit, they have hospital trusts by the short and curlies.
