Pundits/co Commentators?

I got 10 seconds into the game and heard “ Wales will be giving it 110% tonight “ Then although I could hear them talking, zoned them out and can’t recall another word they said.

From what I've seen so far, Laura Woods is easy on the eye, but needs a lot of work on her presenting skills. I like Gabby Logan as a presenter though.

Chris Sutton on the radio is always looking to be controversial, or to wind up the commentator. Fine if it's Robbie Savage on the Saturday phone in, but it's not what we want when trying to listen to a game whilst driving.

Ashley Williams always gives fair, unbiased comment. Nigel De Jong and Joe Cole are ok.

Shearer is not used to being a co-commentator, and it shows. He tries to balance commentary with being a rubbish comedian. Just concentrate on commenting on the football Alan, and leave the scripted jokes to your mate Gary.

I don't mind Ally McCoist, unlike others on here.

One of my favourites though, is Pat Nevin. He's always fair, and appreciates skillful football.

Tyldesley is commentating as I type, and he can spout a good deal of meaningless drivel at times.

On another note, is anyone else getting the impression from all these thought provoking, deep interviews, that Declan Rice is being groomed to be the next England captain?
Good summary. Also think Jenas is okay. If only could commentators could bring more meaningful, unbiased analysis? An obvious example from tonight would have been the change of wings from Foden and Rashford and what difference might that make but no one mentioned it.
A big difference between the commentators of ghe past and nowadays is that they did not consciously set out to be clever or funny like they do now or focus on what they feel would be a story- the old boys just told it as it was.

Why do we even need commentary? I know what I’m watching. I don’t need it at the game. Co commentators are utterly pointless too. Give me crowd noise and match sounds, BBC once offered that during a previous tourney.

As for in studio pundits. Haven’t watched or listened to them in years. No point. And for all the 2 faced self righteousness pundits at the WC, you can do the exact same job in a warm studio in London/Salford/John O Groats, and make more of a statement not going over the Qatar. I get the feeling that all the pitch side stuff, studio pundits etc is for armchair fans who probably have never been near a stadium or never will.

Some of the pundits and hosts have never stood on a terrace or been to a potentially tasty away game.
Amazon have got it right, where you can turn off the commentary if you fancy it.

Without commentators, we'd never have gems like "You have to say that's magnificent", "they think it's all over", "just look at his face", "it's up for grabs now..." or dare I say "Agueroooooo!!!".

The problem I have is that the commentators of today seem to be searching for their own iconic moment. Martin Tyler has been at it for years. Then you have co-commentators like Mark Lawrenson and Steve McManaman who don't seem to want to be there, others who openly admit they know nothing about one of the teams they're being paid to tell us about or people like Neville who use their platform to push their own agenda.
I reckon commentary is overrated mate.

We didn’t hear or need to hear ‘Agüeroooooo!’ in the stadium when we were there live. What made that moment was the goal, the roar from the fans, what it meant towards the title, our history and what it meant in the wider context of the Manchester rivalry.

It wouldn’t be any less enjoyable to watch without any commentary. In fact, it’s better…

Too many ex-players with their biased support/views/agendas, others forcing studio bantz & constant references to their own player career (Wio can't do a stint of punditry without mentioning what he did at old scaffold a decade ago)

Not enough ex-managers to give us a managers-eyed perspective on things.
Remember when Cloughie, Big Mal and Mullery were on the panel?
Great arguments from an informed point of view.

Indeed.

Managers always provide much more insight to their punditry. Someone like Chris Hughton whenever he’s on, always provides good, detailed anyalysis.

Ex-players who haven’t managed or have failed at management aren’t exactly going to peak the interest of the experienced football fan. Many of whom know more about the game than these ex-players.

Many of them do absolutely no research on the teams or players. They just turn up for work at the TV studios once or twice a week and then go home to a life of leisure again. Very very few pundits take their jobs seriously and do proper homework.

What I can’t abide the most from the pundits is their infant English ‘he done a good cross den’, ‘he’s went round him and done a good finish’, ‘ahh ffink dis an ahh ffink dat’… they sound like young primary school children still developing their language and vocabulary. Anyone with a few working brain cells are just going to switch off from their infant babbling.

I don’t mind most radio pundits pat nevin far and away in front of anyone, 5 live John murray and Connor McNamara are pretty good. Don’t honestly take any notice of tv commentators or pundits I just watch the game never watch the build up or the aftermath. If I had a dog a daft or thick as most pundits I wouldn’t feed it.
