Raheem Sterling | Arsenal Player (on loan)

A very talented player and improved significantly under Josep, but he never convinced that he was world class and he had quite a few 'oh Sterling!' Vv. His interview in The Times doesn't develop what the 'reasons' for the change were - perhaps the precursor to another scoop later on - but makes me think it was simply Pep saying expressly or impliedly that he didn't trust him invi the big games.
If you watch the All or Nothing documentary about City, there is a part when Pep is discussing Raz after that miss against Burnley. He stated then that when he had time to think his finishing wasn't great. Surely Raz saw that and obviously knew what Pep thought about him as a player. It wouldn't have helped his confidence to know that is what his coach thought about him.

He was right though.. any time at all to think about it and Raz generally fucked it up

The King is dead, long live the King

Surprised that anyone thinks there's much in what he said. Anyone can read between the lines that Pep stopped trusting Sterling after Lyon, that he wasn't playing in the biggest games, and that their relationship never quite recovered. Must be hard when you're still doing the business for England, so he's backed himself at another club. I'd be shocked if there hasn't been some fraught chats between the two over the last few years. Everyone's an adult, and we don't need our manager to be the player's best friends.
Not sure doing it for England and us has got to do with anything, the drop off in quality from us to England is huge.

He simply came to the end of his shelf life with us and clearly both parties felt the same.

A fine player in our shirt for a majority of his time with us.

No, I'd agree with that. Just think the player still believes he's good enough to build a team around, and had been successful in other teams when that was the case, so backed himself. I've no problem with that, me and (more importantly) Pep didn't agree, but there's no hard feelings.

Wonder what Pep is talking about here?

Personally, I hate these aggregator quotes when the full context of what Pep was saying is lost. Simply, it was Pep talking in generic terms yet again about "happy face". Something he has done repeatedly over the years.

Wonder why you've posted it on here? Do you think it was specifically about Sterling?

Yes, of course I do. It’s common knowledge that Sterling moped around like a bear with a sore arse when he wasn’t selected and that doing that pisses Pep off.

It's very true though.

But I'd assume the psychologists at City had said the same to him. Its definately about mindset with sterling.

Funny thing is he might sort it out but be in a team where he gets a lot less chances
